I am getting psyched to shoot and care for my new 1958 Rem Pietta 44.

I have Elephant FFFg pwder on hand. I want to load it under max powder charge. I think that 30 grains is getting up near max. The spout on my flask is 30 gr. It is not adjustable. I am tempted to cut off about 1/6th of it and smooth it off with some fine sandpaper.

I'll estimate I'd get around 22 grains that way.
I know, I can do the math.
The innerds of the tube of the spout is not tapered.
If I cut off 1/6th and it actually holds 27 gr. I will end up with 22.5 grains volume. I could be sure using a beam scale before and after for a 5/6th figure in weight.
( I know, BP is volume, smokeless is weight. )

This should be a sufficient load for what I'll be needing it for. .451 .455 .457 balls and .457 conicals for up to 50 yd plinking and hole punching.
What say ye? Am I gonna do fine with that?

From what I have quoted here from another source. I'll figure it holds 27.

"Traditions advertises this item as having a 30 grain spout. The spout actually dispenses a 26 - 28 grain charge."

I'd lean toward the notion of working out your preferred load before cutting the spout, but you can always get a new spout.

An adjustable powder measure is worth investing in, usually not completely accurate but easy to tweak your loads, then once you have it tuned in you can pour and weigh a load so you know exactly what it is.

I would not see anything wrong with cutting it down. but you would be left with a spout with 22.5 grains witch is no problem as I see it. if you need more or less grains buy another spout to suit your needs.

Make it work for you. Cut a little, measure and recheck. Repeat until you reach your desired goal.

You could measure out whatever charge you want, funnel it into the spout, mark where the top of the powder is inside the spout, and then cut the spout at that point. No experimentation required.

I really like this revolver. I know it's not much or anything really special but I want to take care of it. I think I am going to buy a cylinder loading press like shown. It would be easier on the loading lever on the revolver and probably extend the life of it considerably and make my loading more pleasant.

The weight of 30 gr of Elephant was 20 gr on my beam scale.
I got this epiphany to use my case trimmer a shell holder and a pilot. Nice and neat job.
I even de-burred and chamfered.
I shaved it down to dispense a weight of 16.3 gr and math wise that should come out to about 24.5 gr BP measured by volume. Given that these flask spouts actually are short of 30 gr. I figure I now get about 22-23 gr volume depending on how hard I hold my thumb down on the spout opening.

In the end, I have done what I started out trying to do. Thanks everyone.

I have a loading press that looks just like that one you have pictured. It was offered under the Traditions brand. I was pretty disappointed by it. Flimsy and awkward describe it politely. I'd recommend going for one of the higher end presses like the "tower of power" etc or building your own.

The only off-gun cylinder loading tools I can find are for .44 caliber only. Does anyone make one for .36 caliber? Probably not hard to modify the bigger one to work with a smaller rammer.

Look at Powder Inc. online. Mine is good for 36 and 44 and works great.

Toot, I use the powder Inc. loader and the smaller ram will work with the Wells Fargo, as I have one and that's what I use. It was a snug fit so I put it in a drill and polished it down to a slightly looser fit, still works with my 36 1861!:D:evil:

I want to load it under max powder charge. I think that 30 grains is getting up near max.

According to Colt, the max charge is as much as will fit with a ball on top. I've found that's about a cylinder full of loose powder for an 1860. Remingtons are stronger than the Colt design.

Of course, yours may shoot better groups with a reduced charge, but don't worry about hurting it as long as you're using real black powder and pure lead balls.
