Went to use my 1970'ish vintage RCBS 5-10 scales yesterday and took them off the shelf in the box, only to find the balance beam broke in two right at the knife-edge bearing pin hole.

This has me mystified, as they have never been dropped or abused, and have always been stored in the box they came in when not being used. And I just used them a couple of weeks ago, and put them away all in working condition.

Anyway, I called RCBS this morning, and they gave me a authorization # to send them to Ohaus for repair or replacement under warranty.

Now I'm wondering what I will get back, since they haven't made that model 5-10 scale for many years.

We shall see I guess.

No, no young children, no cats, no puppies, and just one old dog that can't jump that high, and wouldn't if he could.
It's just me and my wife, and she wouldn't touch my reloading equipment on a bet.

I don't even have any Haints in the basement that I know of.

Sounds like you may have gotten all the worth out of it and it just finally gave up.
Oh and so you know, every basement has haints

I have always kept my 5-10 in a garage, covered, on a shelf - now ya got me wondering if I need to baby it some more. I LIKE that scale - got rid of an electronic one after a few weeks and went back to that. I'm at 30 years plus on mine as well.......

Let us know what Ohaus sends you.

Your powder charges are obviously too heavy for that scale. ( Have heard rumors of spouses dropping things when cleaning and fib about it, but have no first hand knowledge of that ever happening. Sometimes it's best not to know).

Now ya' got me wondering, I have a 20+year old 5-10 that I haven't used in a couple of years, now I need to go to the gun room and look at it.

It too has been stored in the original box since it was new, only came out when I was using it.

Same kinda thing happened to my kids car. Back shock mounts through the trunk, body bolts holding front clip to rear clip broken, radiator mount bent and grass stuck in the bumper. Nothing he knew could have caused it? Dangdest thing I ever seen. ;-)

Just what we need: Another reason to vote the scoundrels out of office. :D

Neglect has caused many a broken heart.

TLC from RCBS will give you another chance to find the culprit responsible.

This may be a "Hint", that you are spending too much time in the loading room.

This thread cracks me up because I can relate to everything being said so far.
Tool boxes have haints too. Just put in a couple of extension cords and leave the lid shut for a few days and see if the snarleys have not been in there.

When are the services? Are you going to berry it next to Rover under the tree in the back?:D

My guess is that the same ghost that moves my sights for one shot out of three probably got to it. :D

Hey St. Dennis:

Sounds like a buddy of mine's story. His 2 boys, ages 11 and 13 were riding their motor cycles on the ranch. Well, the older boy wrecked his and tore it up pretty bad. No boys were hurt just the one bike. Well, when they gety back home that evening, the dad says to the youngest;

Question - "Son were you there when it happened"?
Response - "Yep"
Question - "Did you see what happened"?
Response - "Yep"
Question - "Well, what happened"?
Response - "I don't know"

Guess big brother told his younger that he better keep his mouth shut!!!! BWAHAHAHA

Just a follow-up on RCBS/Ohaus lifetime warranty.

Scales came back via UPS today with a note indicating a new balance beam installed & factory calibration had been done.

No Charge! :D

What a company!
I can't think of any other product I own except my RCBS stuff that would be fixed free if it broke after +/- 40 years service!!

+1 I had a .38/.357 carbide resizing die that had seen extensive use over about 40 years. The carbide sizing ring popped out and I sent it back to RCBS for repair. What I got back was a brand new die at no charge. I would have happily paid, but they wouldn't hear of it.

Outcome was known before you even sent it off.;) Been dealing with RCBS for 40 years...never let me down yet...and people wonder why I bought my RCBS progressive over a Dillon.
