Hello fellow rifleman,
I'm just posting my experience with the Ruger American ranch in .223 , four months ago I was in search for a Savage model 10 scout and luckily my lgs had me walking out with a RAR for $400 out the door, needless to say mission accomplished! I put a Nikon p-223 on it from academy for $200 and put a Witt machine muzzle rise eliminator $0.00 on there that used to be my Dad's ( hope you like the A2 thanks) and I immediately started working up some ammo. I've watched and read every review on the rifle ( to justify my non 308 rifle.. swindled I swear ;) so I will spare you those details. First the bad, you will if your like me stiffen the stocks forearm or replace it entirely, Boyd's has a stock I'm eyeballing (budget smudget) that is tempting, I have noticed a change on the bench that with just my sling it's consistent but I do open the group and have a slight poi change when my knockoff Harris bi-pod is attached that said accuracy is dead varmint good no doubt about it ( more on that later). Another negative was the trigger on this particular example is annoying for bench work but moot for hunting if that makes sense the blade there isn't a problem besides rusting compared to the trigger itself but the adjustment didn't really change the feel, the take up is minimal to none but when it hits the wall and you build the pressure needed it releases at a point and there's a gap it travels that's lighter than the pressure needed at first then bang (this is just one example rifle btw) I did lighten the spring and polished everything up keeping the same angles I didn't stone or anything (yet) it helped but without shortening up the Sears breaking/tripping point it's still annoying to me but it's still moot when snap shooting/hunting etc . The other ones are mag price and quality which is bad. OH YEAH and comb height (stop me if you haven't heard that before) and they don't really use a finish insert when milling and the bolt and receiver has those file like lines that make throwing the bolt sound like I'm literally filing metal so keep the bolt clean until it's worn in and maybe work some compound on it polish it up idk. Reminds me of that svelte sound a bersa thunder makes when racked (just shuddered). The pro's are it's fun to shoot! The accuracy is perfectly acceptable I make 55gr fn gc cast bullets from Lee's cheap offering and load up 2ish grains of trail boss and have a stupid quite crow smacking round, which is fun and doesn't get the cops called by my "what about the children!!!" Land infringing neighbor. I will say that all the shooting has been with Witts neat muzzle brake (you can keep your eye on the prize and never lose sight through your scope) and Idk if the barrel harmonic God's don't like it but I've had 1" moa with my lighter weight v-max loads as well as the 75grainers (as match as i can get it .002 from throat, the load it individually kind ) didn't matter it was the same accuracy but it was 1" or less consistently with barrel cooled groups (it strings after 5 no biggie not it's intended goal). NATO offerings aren't great and neither is the steel brands stuff it groups like if you were to throw confetti in the air and wallah there's your pattern so feed it well. It's best pro is the same reason it exists it's a handy little rifle for a great price that will go with you out around your RANCH (I love it when they do that) or up the hills and it's diet is relatively cheap enough for the thriftiest of us. That's all I have what has your experience been any favorite loads? My parting piece is two jugs I smacked at 200 one with the 55? Grain v-max and the barnes ttsx (expensive) which compelled me to brag to my friend and write this novice piece (so don't be critical pls). The vmax was dead center and the barnes an inch left but the barnes really ripped it up so it won that battle!

Just adding that I jumped on the stock and am currently bedding the pillars I have written this link on some load development if you would like to follow and see what changes in accuracy can be seen httpshighroad.org/index.php?threads/raranch-load-data-2.826502/

Thanks for the info.

.....it just so happens that I recently became interested in that exact model.

There seem to be only a couple bolt actions that are spec'd for both .223 and 5.56 and I kind of like the compact nature of a 16" barrel.

How is the mag? Is it at least fairly well made and durable looking?

Overall, do you feel it's a good value?

I was looking for a .223/5.56 bolt gun for my daughter, and if the Ruger came with iron sights we would have bought it. Surprisingly, only the CZ 527 has both iron sights and the 5.56 rating. No regrets, I can tell you . . .

I have the same rifle and mine and my brothers consistently shoots 1/2 groups even with wolf WPA 62 gt sp. With federal fusion I get them in the same hole. My trigger is sweet and light.

The mags are crap to answer your question but seem to feed somewhat reliably also btw they will fit 6 rnds, I am waiting for a stanag conversion kit, I definitely wanted irons but I can live without them until I can't and decide to braze on a front hood. If you have the 527 look into the rear peep sight that goes on the back of the receiver it lengthens your LOS and who doesn't like aparetures

Not the exact same animal, but my American Predator 6.5 Creedmoor also loves Fusions. Great ammo for the price!

For the short 308 based chamberings there are two options to get into good magazines. One is the Magpul hunter stock which allows use of Magpul 308 P mags.

Guess what I want for my birthday this year! :D

There is actually no such thing as a STANAG magazine. STANAGS are NATO standardization agreements and NATO never agreed on a standard magazine. A draft STANAG #4179 was proposed in 1980 and expired without being adopted.
