i was reading a new article in shooting times magazine about remingtons new cartridge for the AR-15. dubbed the ".30 RAR". With some ingenious ingenuity, they took an AR-25 bolt carrier and modified it to work inside a propriatary upper to fit on the AR-15. this new cartidge falls short of .308 win performance but does eccede 30-30 performance.

the case is basically a .450 bushmaster (.284 win) necked down and trimmd. (specs can be found at shooting times website if you are really interested. it is a good read)

the cartridge is kinda like a 7.62x39 on major steroids. according to the magazine article...

125 grn. rem core-lokt PSP 2800 fps with a muzzle energy of 2176, 100 yard energy of 1686 and 967 lbs at 300. not to bad. the cartridge operates at 55,000 psi

here"s my question... in your opinion, would this cartridge be someting that you would by, or would you stick with the more tried and true varients.... like the 6.8 spc, or the .450 bushmaster, or the 458 socom.. so on so forth. just looking to get some feed back. it is cool though, that big companies are starting to really put a lot of money and R&D into this awsome rifle plateform.

thanks guys, brian

If you do a search, there is a lot of threads about this cartridge. It is okay, but IMO, a "improved" 7.62x39 would be a better choice, similar performance, and more mag capacity. This one is going to suffer the painfully low capacity of the .450 methinks.

I wonder how steel case ammo would be for "fireforming"...that would be intresting to see. probably wouldn't be all that accurate though, even worse then before.

Look across the firearm industry and you see all these new rounds that keep come'n up and most if not all don't do anything better than something else all ready do'es. You can see 223. 243, 223wssm, 243wssm, 6.5, 6.8, 308,300rum, 300 whisper, the russian rounds of which there are several and on up to the to fat to do much beyound 100 yard rounds.Other than eather the 6.5 or 6.8 none of the new rounds make much scents. I know i missed a 300 or two that someone allready loads. Just more rounds that will find the trash bin in a few years like many more from the past in the industry.

Yes I'm patiently waiting to see how this round does on the market then I'll probably buy one for my hunting specific upper. As you can see from the sig links my x39 works well out to 300yds or so. But when loaded with the same bullet that extra 400fps the RAR brings to the table to me translates to another 100yds and of course much better game anchoring and trajectory at all ranges inside that.

I would also like to see what this round can do with a 150grn bullet, I'm figuring 2500 fps will be possible which will be quite nice for whitetail as well if loaded with a Ballistic tip, SST or 30-30 bullet

I won't chance it with mine. Steel doesn't have the elastic properties of brass.

improving x39 with a 30 degree shoulder only go me about 5% more capacity and in the AR platform with a x39 sized bolt and carrier you don't really have the strength needed to ramp up pressure to make a AIx39 be much of a boost in performance. Improving x39 doesn't get you anywhere near the performance the 30RAR brings to the table.

As the old saying goes there's no replacement for displacement

What if you could get a more sturdy bolt? The RAR uses one of the "big" AR bolts, so if you used the same size bolt, but made the face smaller...lots more lug surface area, no?

What would be the point?
All the steel case ammo is Berdan primed, and is very difficult to reload.

Even if you could get Berdan primers anymore.

In which case why not go with the RAR and make use of the new uppers ability to digest cartridges with much more case capacity and therefore ballistic performance?

Don't fall into the 6.x'ers line of thinking that every upper needs to be able to kill moose at 800yds and have 60rnd mags for social work. That's not what the RAR is for, the RAR allows someone with a ar15 to slap on an upper that'll let the shoot Bambi like they did with their rem700 only using the AR platform. Much like the current crop single stack of big bore AR offerings are used but with much better long range performance

For this cartridge and the application it's intended for I really don't care too much about mag capacity or ammo price thus an "improved" x39 really doesn't appeal to me. If folks want cheap plinkin most already have an upper in a caliber with relatively cheap ammo (excluding current insanity) myself included.

Okay, thats a good point. I am not saying i don't like the round, it has a lot of promise, just for some reason it doesn't appeal to me.

Well it's definitely a niche round intended for a specific purpose. But I' excited about the marriage of big case to medium bore in the AR15, sumpin I've been wishing for for quite awhile. This could be the start of an entire line of cartridges that could allow the ar15 to do things that's been traditionally an AR10 only game

Hmmm....i wonder what would happen if you necked it down to 7mm, or up to .338...would be cool. Need SHORT bullets in the .338 version i would think.
