Because of you guys, I have decided to divert my attention from gorgeous rifles like the NGA X7 (http://nga.squarespace.com/gallery/x7-the-gray-rifle/) and focus my attention on something a little more practical.

My pick: CZ Model 455 American .22 LR (http://cz-usa.com/products/view/455-american/)

Here's what I understand about the beauty. The guns from Ceska Zbrojovka Uhersky Brod (you guys all know about CZ) are built on modern machinery, but they have the look and feel of firearms built before WWll--milled solid steel and walnut, put together carefully. Country of origin (Czech Republic) aside, the Model 455 is totally American.

Hopefully this is one gun I won't be criticized too much for finding. Now for the question of epic proportions:

Do you guys like it?

I like the look of that.
I haven't tried a 455 but a club member here in London had a 452 with a can, a bipod and nice scope and that was a really sweet rifle.
Enjoy that rifle, it's a very respectable rifle (whether for a beginner or not).

I can't comment on the .17 side...we can't use them at our club and I never got the chance to use one in South Africa.

After shooting my CZ 452FS...and finding it more accurate than my glass bedded Ruger 77/22....I sold the ruger to buy another CZ...the heavy barreled Varmint...never looked backed.....well it did lead to another CZ ..a 527FS..in 223....when I find another CZ...I have another ruger to sell....

An excellent choice and a rifle worthy of any marksman.

If you put 1000 well considered rounds of .22LR through your CZ455 each month from prone, sitting and standing, by this Fall you'll group 20 rounds into 4" at 100 yards when standing.

With a big game rifle, you will be able to take ethical shots at game from standing, out to 150yds.

Bonus, those skills will easily transfer to a quality .223 carbine.

Suggest you look into Metallic Silhouette smallbore rifle matches, a great inexpensive way to have fun and meet up with other marksmen and women. If you wanna learn the finer points, silhouette people will welcome you and be glad to help out.

The CZ rimfires are recognized as one of the best values in the market. I want one desperately myself, but I'm still debating whether I'd be better served by just picking up a Savage MkII, since I don't coddle my guns and I know I'm gonna cry when I inevitably ding up a CZ walnut stock (and the beechwood stocks are heresy IMO).

Go for it, and get yourself to an Appleseed shoot, for the best possible introduction to riflery you're liable to get. :) As others have said, the skills you learn will transfer quite well over to centerfire rifles.

There's not really any such thing as "starting out" with a .22 - everyone should have at least one, and most of us do, no matter how long we've been shooting or how many shiny ARs we have in the safe!

Congrats on the decision!

My CZ-452 Lux is by far my favorite rifle. From the walnut stock to the finely machined action, fit and finish are just astounding for an inexpensive rifle. It almost always winds up at the range with me and is an absolute joy to shoot.

I hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine.

Congrats. By all accounts I've read, they are fine rifles. I've never shot one, but they sure feel nice in my hands.

Hopefully this is one gun I won't be criticized too much for finding. Now for the question of epic proportions:

Do you guys like it?

No offense, but it doesn't matter. It matters if you like it. Don't buy stuff to impress guys online that you will probably never meet but a handful of. You paid for them, not other people. You should like them, not them. If they do, its a bonus.

I think thats the best pick a person can find now short of some of the old 20s and 30s US target .22s. If I did not have a grandfather that left me a savage 19 NRA rifle or a Mossburg match gun I would be getting a CZ 455. But thats just me as I also traded off a what most call a nice old BHP 9mm as it seemed a waste of time and ammo having several CZ 75s.

You made a very good choice. I don't have a 455, but the 452's and 453's are great 22 rifles. Be careful, there could easily be another one in your future.
