Glock==FREE

IF you have huge hands (or tiny hands) a double stack magazine pistol mayhap is not for you.

Me, I have kinda medium hands, and have 4 or 5 models of Glocks.

The 4th Gen Glock 19 is, IMHO the best pistol for self defense in the World.

In the house I carry, going out I carry, 15 + 1 rounds of 147g Ranger T, perfect. An extra mag G17 sits on the off side of my belt, plus a flash light.

The rounds you carry in self defense, strip your pistol down, drop each round you are going to carry into the chamber, "clunk" tip it out, then load them up, perfect.

Night sights, butt plug, extended slide release (I know Glock does not call it that!) TruGlo night sights.

Keep Safe.

Scouse.

Another welcome to the High Road. I have 5 Glocks (23,27, 19, 30S and a 20) as well as CZ's, Springfields, Rugers, Sigs, Smith and Wessons, FNS' and a Canik. They're all great.

If you're going with a Glock, consider the 23 as you can easily swap the barrel and magazines and have 3 calibers, 40, 9 and 357 Sig with the same gun. Figure on about $250 per caliber change, $150 for the barrel and $100 for 3 magazines. The ergonomics on the Glocks are average at best and the worse out of the guns I listed (to me, anyway). I don't care for their triggers and installed Phantom triggers on all of them. On the plus side, and the reason I own them are that I don't remember having a malfunction with any of them and they tend to be a few ounces lighter then comparable guns from other manufacturers. You notice those few ounces if you're carrying it all day and reliability in a carry piece is a must.

If you haven't ruled out other manufacturers, take a look at the ones other posters have mentioned as well as Springfields. If you're not in a hurry, take your time and enjoy the search. Go to gun shops in your area and check out other options and if possible rent the ones you like. Keep in mind that ergonomics are a personal thing. Only you can decide if a gun fits you well.

Brand new to the hobby and already exposed to the Glock vs. the world debate. LOL. Glad we're not discussing 45 vs 9. :what:

OnT, welcome to THR and welcome to the hobby. If you're willing to come to Houston I'd be happy to take you to the range and let you try what I own.

Nobody can tell you what's right for you. Buy one of each of the guns mentioned or if $s don't allow you to do that (like most of us), keep renting until you've found what you like. The great news is that guns hold their value very well so if you change your mind later you won't take too big of a bath trading something in for something else.

I really enjoy my G23 , in fact a have 3 of them all G23 GEN4 models, they are
fantastic and 100% reliable and on top of that super easy to clean.
I did switch out the sights to 3 dot type but this is just my opinion and as
said already you can switch barrels for other calibers :)

That has me puzzled as if there may be a reason it's more desirable.

The 19 is more desirable than the 23 because it's 9mm.

All the effectiveness of .40SW, but lower cost, lower recoil, and more capacity.

All the Glock bashers out there and you find the 9mm in short supply. Go figure. You don't need a 40. There is no magic bullet. 9mm has more capacity for the given size of the gun. Learn to shoot the 9mm well. I found a deal on a .40 Glock 27, and bought a Lone Wolf 9mm barrel for $100. I load 9mm and can shoot inexpensive lead bullets out of it all day long for not much more than 22 LR.

I also prefer the Glock 17, as I also like the longer sight radius and the larger grip size. I agree to go try out both the Glock 17 & 19, since you can't go wrong either way.

I've had my Gen3 17 for 7 years and I've shot many thousands of rounds through mine. But there are other great options other than the Glocks, and I would also encourage you to try and shoot as many different types of pistols that you can, such as the CZ-75 and several of the Sigs such as the P-226 and P-229.

If I was going to only get one pistol, it would be a Glock 23 (.40 cal.) with a 9mm conversion barrel. You can convert smaller, but not larger. You can also shoot 9mm out of a .40 mag or buy some cheap Magpul mags. You can also get a .22 conversion kit for it.

Tried all of the compact 9mm. offerings (Glock 19, S&W M&P Compact, and SA XD Compact), and went with a Ruger SR9c as it had the best overall ergonomics for me.

My hands measure 9.2" from pinky to thumb. Size is not a problem for me, but the ergos still suck. My gen 3 model 20:
8" here...
I like that one so much I have "more than one"....
I'm always amazed at what one person prefers over the other when it comes to fit and pistols. Ridiculous to argue about because its personal preference and there's no good or bad about that. :)

I've owned a lot of various types of handguns at one time or another. Wouldn't buy a Glock, until a 17 was included with a trade deal I was doing. That was 11 years ago, still have it. They are simple guns, easy to modify and clean. Tried a 19, didn't fit. Bought a 26 and like it as well as the 17 and is my edc.

IMO, the G19 is the Goldilocks Glock. Not too big, not too small, but juuuuuuust right.
I've got a Glock 19 and a Glock 22. I GREATLY prefer the Glock 19.

I used the Glock 19 for my CHL class's shooting exercise. With Winchester White Box 147gr. JHPs, it was monotonously accurate. After I shot the center of the target out, I spent the rest of the time shooting out the NRA logo, copywrite notices, and anything else on the target, just to occupy myself.

Lone Wolf??

I do not know anything about Lone Wolfe barrels or parts for the Glock 9mm pistols.

Are they good for anything other than shooting lead bullets?

I see a lot of used Lone Wolf barrels......

You didn't ask my opinion, but I'll give it anyway, the ultimate 9mm is the Browning HP. Having said that, sometimes you want as smaller (and less expensive gun) the G19 fills the position admirably. Never shot a CZ, but I'd be happy to try it...

As to the 9mm vs .40 cal ( having last year entered the ranks of .40 cal owners) I think 9 mm is just fine; the cost is better when a guy with 3 kids is concerned). But I also don't think the difference is enough to fight about to be honest. I like having more than 1 caliber for when you need the ammo and all they have is one flavor situation.
