Another welcome to the High Road. I have 5 Glocks (23,27, 19, 30S and a 20) as well as CZ's, Springfields, Rugers, Sigs, Smith and Wessons, FNS' and a Canik. They're all great.
If you're going with a Glock, consider the 23 as you can easily swap the barrel and magazines and have 3 calibers, 40, 9 and 357 Sig with the same gun. Figure on about $250 per caliber change, $150 for the barrel and $100 for 3 magazines. The ergonomics on the Glocks are average at best and the worse out of the guns I listed (to me, anyway). I don't care for their triggers and installed Phantom triggers on all of them. On the plus side, and the reason I own them are that I don't remember having a malfunction with any of them and they tend to be a few ounces lighter then comparable guns from other manufacturers. You notice those few ounces if you're carrying it all day and reliability in a carry piece is a must.
If you haven't ruled out other manufacturers, take a look at the ones other posters have mentioned as well as Springfields. If you're not in a hurry, take your time and enjoy the search. Go to gun shops in your area and check out other options and if possible rent the ones you like. Keep in mind that ergonomics are a personal thing. Only you can decide if a gun fits you well.
