My first gun

A Garand gets you a rifle you can use to shoot competitively. OK for deer hunting and a proven battle rifle for self-defense. Ammo is much more expensive than 7.62x39, but it's more powerful, more accurate and...more American.

I wouldn't mind owning one of these, don't know how often I'll shoot it. I understand
that one can get this in .308 Win from SpringFeild Armory.

I'm going to save up ~$1000 for three guns(at least), ammo, cases, and assorys.

You don't want the M-1 from Springfield Armory, Inc., even if it's in .308. They are cast receivers, not forged, and have dimensional problems. Plus, they aren't "real" Garands, but commercial copies. Get a USGI M-1 from the CMP. It's a much better rifle for the price. If you have to have .308/7.62, get a "Rack Grade" M-1 from the CMP and use the money you save to have the rifle rebarreled in .308 and refinished. You'll still be ahead of the game.

I didn't know that the CMP was still around. Firgured Clition axed it long time ago.
