I am looking into buying an automatic (I will eventually buy several, and probably revolvers as well, but for the purpose of this discussion, I am really only interested in people’s opinions on automatics). It will be my first handgun (I know, sounds like it should be a Playskool or Fisher Price product), so I am looking for something THAT MUST HAVE the following features:

1) It must be simple to operate.
2) It must be chambered in 9x19mm—I don’t have that much money to spend on exotic ammo, plus, I like it.
3) It must be either compact or full size—I don’t need or want a subcompact at this time because I am planning on purchasing a couple of deep conceal pieces (I am moving to Red Stick, LA and plan on dressing lightly most of the time).
4) It must be FUN AS HELL TO SHOOT. I want to spend time at the range and have a blast doing it. I want to get good at shooting whatever I buy.
5) It MUST have an external safety of some kind other than the one between my ears. I know people have strong opinions that this “really isn’t necessary,” and that it’s “stupid” of me to think that, but I’ve been lurking for a while and I’ve read them already, so if you want to criticize, please go elsewhere. I’m buying a Glock 19 NEXT, OK? :)

Here are some very strongly preferred characteristics:

1) Stainless steel or stainless steel/composite—the last thing I want to have to worry about if I do start to carry it regularly is sweat causing it to rust
2) Possibility of CC—I am 6’ and change, just a bit shy of 6’1”, and while I’d like to weigh about 190 (and probably will after biking for most of the summer/fall), right now I’m about 210. I wear loose-fitting dress shirts or T-shirts, very rarely tuck unless in some sort of formal situation, and wear loose jackets when seasonally appropriate.
3) Possibility of customizing/accessorizing as I get a better grip on what I like.
4) Cost/Performance ratio, i.e. good value.
5) Nothing Chinese. Any other country on Earth, no problem.

Other things that may be useful to note is that I have fairly large palms but long, slender fingers (think surgeon, pianist, though I’m neither). I seem to have a natural talent for hitting what I aim at—I scored a 139 out of 150 at my cc certification with somebody else’s gun, having probably never fired more than 250 rounds from a handgun in my life, never having fired a revolver (and not much liking it), and not having fired anything larger than a Ruger .22lr in almost ten years (but when I did, I liked the 9mm the best and could hit the target the best with it, having also tried a .44 magnum with an at least 8” barrel, as well as Glocks and Sigs in .40 and .45).

I will probably have only this one handgun (in addition to a deep conceal or two) for a while, and have looked into prices before suggesting any of these, so up to about $800 would be OK, though the more money I have left over, the nicer a mousegun I can afford at the same time. Total budget is say 1100 or 1200 for both. Plus I need cases, holsters, etc...

Some items I am considering include the following:

CZ 75 B Stainless
BHP—which models or finishes are most rust-resistant? I don’t think there’s a stainless, is there?
Springfield XD 9 (do they have a compact?)
HK USP Compact
CZ D PCR
Ruger SR9

These choices are mainly based on brand preferences expressed here and on other forums or model preferences expressed here and elsewhere, but not necessarily both. Feel free to tell me I have SFB and should buy something else entirely; I’m new at this and am asking because I know many of you are not. I know I will need to shoot before i buy, and I will do so--I just want to narrow down my list.

Some great pistols on that list of yours.

Regarding having a safety, stainless steel, easy and FUN to shoot and chambered in 9mm, two pistols automatically came to mind.

Springfield Armory Loaded 9mm 1911 and Kimber Stainless Target II 9mm 1911.

It pretty much fit every category, and nothing else is as fun to shoot than a 1911. :D

Lots of good choices. You can't go wrong with any.

Of the ones you listed, the CZs and BHP are probably my top ones.

I had a full sized CZ75b and it was very good. I also had a P-01 which was much nicer. A friend of mine has the PCR D which is also a pleasure to shoot.

I've since sold all my CZs and have ended up with a BHP. I haven't shot it yet (tomorrow morning) but I love the way it feels! The most resistant finish on BHPs is the Silver (Matte) Chrome. Its a hard chrome finish that usually found with adjustable sights and the gold (pimp) trigger. The BHP I picked up was a plain Mk.III with the matte black finish. Some say that finish is the second strongest

I shot my friends XD-9. It's the only polymer gun I enjoyed shooting. I know they make a small version, but it'll probably fall in the sub-compact size.

I didn't like the HK Compact I shot. Granted it was a .40 and had too much muzzle flip for me.

You also might want to look into the S&W M&P-9. I believe you can get them on sale now with a rebate for 2 more magazines. I think www.budsgunshop.com has them.

YMMV. Good luck!

You can’t beat a 1911, mine is in .45, I want an SR9 with a rail mounted laser really bad, but a 1911 in 9mm is great fun or the HK as mentioned and you would be good to go-

Springfield does make the XD-9 in either Tactical (5" barrel, normal grip), Service (4" barrel, normal grip) Compact (4" barrel, shortened grip) or the Subcompact (3" barrel, shortened grip). I've shot them all, and they're all great guns. The great part about the compact model is that you get two different magazines, one is a 10 rounder that sits flush with the shorter grip, the other is a 16 rounder with an extension piece that makes it feel like a Service model which is great for the range. Essentially, you get 2 guns for 1.

I have an XD, and I love it so much I'm about to buy a second.

CZCZCZCZCZCZCZCZCZCZCZCZ fits that bill in a big way!

The USP Compact would also be really great, they are rugged and I like the lines of the slide a lot.

Can't really go wrong with a CZ and they offer great cost-quality ratio.

How similar in size are Cz 75 B, standard 1911, and BHP? I'm talking height, length, girth...

A smallest to largest would be great. Thanks!

EDIT: IGNORE! Found it!

Beretta 92FS is good - a 92G is the decocker-only version so if you hit the lever while racking, you get a DA pistol, not a paperweight. (The DA may not be as much safety as yoyu were looking for, though.) I have a 92G Vertec (no longer made) that's well past a 1000 rounds with no issues of any sort. I don't know that 1911s can match that reliability for the price. The 90-Two is an evolution of the breed, but it's newer, I don't know if the innards are the same.

The M&P9 is a good gun, (at least mine has been), but no external safety so far as I know. There keep on being rumors of it but it keeps not showing up.

O.P. said STRONGLY prefer STEEL

that makes M&P/XD and the smarty Gluck 19 being tossed out

CZ 75B has a width only 0.03" wider, 0.10" less in height, and
0.55" less in O.A.L. than a full size 1911. the width though is
only in the grip, since the slide rails sit inside the frame - DA first
shot if which may be preferred if you're carrying or it resides at rest
in the home for HD. ANd the Cocked & Locked option is there with
the thumb safety. Known for great quality/cost, and a rep.for
accuracy.. You should be able to get one easily for less than $600 &
leave room for a couple of spare mags, holster & cleaning kit and
some other accessory you havne't thought of yet, like good ear muffs
for the range, etc.

The Kadet .22 LR Conversion kit, is available - slide barrel spring and magazine. SPeaking of slides, did you know the compact slide/barrel/spring
fits on the full size? It does, the frame rails are the same length - an
owner on a forum said he swapped them, and CZ sometimes offeres the full size frame with the compact slide it's called a semi-compact.

If we could have a very good shooter go up and shoot a beretta 92 FS vs
a CZ 75B I'd put my money on the CZ 75B being more accurate. - modifications if any being equal as much as possible.

I said stainless OR stainless and composite. Either way is cool--I'm just not an experienced gun owner so I want the rust problem to take care of itself. :)

I also said external safety and I'd get a Glock 19 NEXT, but two people have suggested them anyways... ;)

Thanks so much for all of the awesome advice.

People have answered questions I hadn't even thought to ask.

You said you want a external safety. Do mean one like the 1911? I ask because the XD9 only has the grip safety. Also, there is a new external trigger safety for the Glock trigger. simple drop in part, no smithing. I don't have one but I've handled it and it actually works. Just more info. Here's the link just scroll down:

@tntwatt & BlindJustice:

Both awesome things to think about (other people, too, but you guys both nailed it with useful info)!

I've enjoyed my M&P9. Very reliable, great ergonomics.

You've mentioned a load of excellent firearms, but your list of wants and preferences is longer than mine were when I was picking a wife. Of course, that's only lasted 4 decades. If you make the "wrong" choice, you can always get another pistol. Much easier than trading in for a new SWMBO.

When you say fun to shoot, the first thing that comes to mind is Beretta 92FS... Jon Woo, John McClain, Martin Riggs, what's not to like? :D

Welcome! Others have given great advice, but I gotta put a word in for SIG 9mms, they don't have an external safety, and it bothered me until I owned one and felt safe with it no matter what.

There is just so many wonderful 9mm SIG options.

My declaration of love, SIG 226 9mm w/ CTgrips, if not that the Taurus 9mm is a heck of a gun and I believe cover all your criteria,

I had a long, serious talk with a very old friend who's had handguns his whole life and he seems to think that my non-safety phobia can be cured by behavioral means, i.e. never chambering a round until I am ready to fire, until, if ever, that no longer freaks me out due to training, handling, familarity, comfort, whatever you want to call it.

He no longer carries regularly, though he has about half a dozen Sigs, Glocks, and HK's in various calibres and keeps a full-frame USP with a tactical light next to his bed. But even when he did, he never carried with a round chambered. In his words, "if it takes me a half a second to rack the slide in a dangerous situation it's better than fouling the trigger on something, (like my finger!), when I pull it out and shooting myself in the foot in a moment of panic. That would be embarassing..."

He still recommends his two faves, the HK and Sig. I'll have to shoot those, too--the rental on all these is gonna be murder. ;o)

Good list you have there. For range AND carry the CZ-75D PCR is really hard to beat. Its a very accurate, reliable and well made weapon. I've got most of the guns on your list and the PCR is the one I carry.
