I’m considering buying a new Springfield GI 1911 in stainless steel. The price at a local shop is pretty good and I like the looks of the gun. It would be primarily used as a plinker, but I want it to be reliable so that I could use it for self defense in a pinch.

I looked at some other stainless guns, and I must say that I prefer simple, full-sized guns without the foreword slide serrations. Also, I don’t like the use of cheap plastic parts on the Kimbers. If I’m going to spend my hard earned dollars on a gun, I don’t want cheap plastic on it.

How are the Springfield stainless pieces?

I have one and really like it. The only real issue I have is that my 55 yo eyes are not that happy with the GI sights. Even with that the thing will chew a hole at 25 feet.

I am having a local smith install higher vis sights, but other than that it will stay stock.

in my opinon anything by sa is good to go in my book. i am loyal to there company. i own 3 sa pistols, 2 xd's and 1 1911. though mine isn't the model that you are asking about, i have shot the same model on many occasions and were really impressed with it.

I owned the model you are talking about and only had one complaint. When I was shooting, sometimes the slide would get caught on the bullet and youd have to push it forward. Aside from that i LOVED that gun.

I When I got mine it had a FE. Sent it to SA and they ddid some poloishing and I have had no problems with it since. It is a keeper!! The pistol is more accurate than I am.

UPDATE:

I should mention, when I first got it suffered with random FTE on last round. I called SA, and sent it back for repair.
Week later got a check sent to me to cover the shipping cost.
Then, they replaced ejector and extractor and lowered and flared the ejection port. They did this under warranty and shipped back to me at no cost.

So even if you buy one and it is not 100% SA will make it right and then some!

Hey man!

Go for it, though I don't have a SA GI, I know they're good guns. Though quite a bit more money, the Colt in stainless are something to also consider, they'll be the Milspec equivalent in stainless (lowered ejection port, larger combat sights). The SA has the advantage of not having any sort of firing pin safety in their guns.

Well, to confess, I saw the Springfield while buying a Colt. I had to get the Colt because it is a classic, but I am tempted to put some money down on the Springfield when I go in tomorrow to pick up the Colt. It's a lot of money to spend in one month, but with California laws going the way they are, I'm kind of thinking that if I like it, I shouldn't hesitate. I'm basically looking for affirmation that it wouldn't be a bad purchase.

Well, as I always say. A Colt is always the right answer. But, adding the GI would be a good choice.

One gun is none and two guns are one.
