My first put precisionish build

I use a plumb bob hanging from a door frame to verify that

That makes sense since it will be shot from the prone more often than anything else. As for keeping the scope level I found a bubble level that came with a picture hanging kit. Thank you for input. Semper

Once I figure out what exactly a plumb bob is and how it works I'll give it a shot. Full disclosure when it comes to outside of firearms interests I don't have any. I didn't build a whole lotta anything. I have a basic knowledge of how things work/should work and if it gets to involved I will happily call someone that knows what they're doing.

It's basically just a weight on a string, just about the oldest and simplest tool in existence. To use it I just put a thumb tack on the top of the door trim and wrap the string around the tack at the right height.

You don't have to buy one, you can use any weight on a string, I made mine using black string and a fishing weight, tie a loop on one end and tie off the other end, I have 2 garages, probably 100'+ apart, I put a small nail above the trim on one and sit in the other with my gun in a vise, I use the Wheeler vise mount system to true my rings and level my gun.

Yeah it can basically be anything with some actual weight to it. The one I'm using now was my grandfather's. He made it out of a 20mm bullet from the F-4's he was working on when he got out of the Air Force.

I I always figured the horizontal line was the important that is absolutely critical to have straight. Always figured the vertical line would automatically be straight up and down. Kinda like open sights along as your lined up and there's equal space between the front sight and the rear (horizontally) and even across the top (again horizontally) you are gonna be able to hit your target even if your upside down or sideways.

We can get back to to scope mounting once I decide on the optic that is going to actually be on the rifle. Right now I'm thinking the pistol grip is my next step. This is what I'm thinking. Anyone have experience with this grip? How easy is it to add grip panels and will the fit as is or will I have to modify the grip panels to work with the gun. I have grip panels picked out already.

Range day 1. This has been a lot of fun putting together. Middle group is 4 rounds center of the target. Decided to sight about 1.5 inches high because my range finder decided to stop working today ( only half the digits show up). So it prints about 1.5 inches high at 100ish yards. The 2nd group is upper right. That round way up is my bad. I have a lot of rust to shake off. The upper left was the last two groups of the day. Was very pleased with the last three rounds sent down range. They are the ones left of the target. The brake from just the tip tactical worked way better than expected. The crosshairs barely moved and felt recoil was like shooting .223/5.56. Didnt stay out long enough to see about flash suppression.

Had a bit of trouble getting comfortable behind the weapon. Then I remembered that the stocks lop can be adjusted ( I can hear the snickers now) like I said I have gotten rusty. Very happy with the way this build has gone. When the time comes I think a fixed stock with adjustable comb is the way I'm gonna go. I'll upgrade the grip and bipod later on, but for now my "Tacical urban deer getter" is range ready. Now I've got to get myself range ready.

I'm pretty sure I'm calling this journey complete and now it's time to practice practice practice. 20230516_200455.jpg 20230517_011718.jpg 20230517_011749.jpg

Hit the range, well gravel pit, and fired 8 more rounds. Definitely my favorite firearm at this time. Fired at a SME silhouette shooting targets (11.5 in X 22 inch with a black silhouette on a light background) put out to about 230ish yards. One round outside the black. I snatched the trigger on that shot. The rest weqre in a very loose group in the black.

My buddy thought it was amazing that I was making hits at that range and couldn't understand why I was not happy with the results. I don't think that I did anything amazing at all. Anyone can hit the black part of this particular target. I want my hits to be in a cluster preferably touching making one hole. And this rifle set up gives me the tool to make it happen if I do my part.

OK so I am looking for some opinions on pistol grips. I need to replace the pistol grip on this rifle and I'm not sure where to start. Currently I have an AB Arms grip ( can't recall the name) but it is too thin and I don't find in comfortable at all.

Magpul MOE+ or K2+

If you have smaller hands MOE SL.

There's also the MIAD, customizable and a little more $.

It's been a short summer. Where did the time go? Anyway I thought I'd update this post and give some highlights.

Alright so I started putting this rifle together over the last winter. For those that don't want to reread this part feel free to scroll down. The rifle is a Remington model 700 sps chambered in .308 Winchester. It has a 16.5 inch threaded barrel. It came with a ghilie green Hogue overmolded stock. I purchased this rifle used at an auction for $264. What I added:
American Built Arms ModX Gen3 Chassis system. The pistol grip (sbr pgrip) and the Urban Sniper Stock X were included.
I am pleased with the chassis. The buttstock is decent enough that it's going to stay until I happen across something later down the road. The pistol grip is being replaced next. It's too thin and it's not comfortable in my hand.
Just the Tip Tacticle JT-350 muzzle brake.
I'll be honest I decided to go with this break because the inner 12 year old inside of me. However, for being a hybrid muzzle device it does as advertised. The flash suppression is better than nothing. The main thing this device does is reduce felt recoil to about .223 levels and eliminated muzzle jump drastically.
Various scope mounting solutions and two scopes before deciding on a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6X24mm on a Vortex cantilever mount.
This set up is only a couple days old but it is staying on this rifle.
Champion bipod
Replacing with MDT ONYX when funds permit.
Sylvan Arms folding stock adapter.
I am honestly thinking this will go when I am read to replace the buttstock. It's neat and allows me to put the rifle in small spaces for storage. I just don't use often enough.

With this being the first build(put together) rifle I'm pleased with the turn out and learned a lot along the way. Now if I could just find more time to go to the range and shoot her. My rifles name is Margaret because... well it's my rifle and she feels like a Margaret. Thanks for reading and safe shooting.

Update

I ran into a problem with the buttstock. I was going to adjust the length of pull when I discovered that the adjustment screw had bent and wouldnt back out enough to allow the stock to slide on the buffer tube. Simple enough I thought to myself I'll take the buffer tube off seeing that it was loose anyway, and figure out the screw problem. Yup that was great if you can find your wrench to take the castle nut off and have the patients to wait till you get home to find it. Neither of these things were true. What I did have is my wife's angle grinder and a tunnel vision mentality of a ticked off ape. Yup cut the buffer tube off the rifle. So as it sits Margaret is buttless. My plan is to replace the carbine tube I cut off her with an A2 tube and replace the buttstock with a fixed stock. Still shopping for what I want and can afford. I'll incorporate the folding adapter into my next build once I complete this one.

I did replace the glass with a vortex strike eagle 1-6×24 in a vortex cantilever mount. Not sure if the mount will stay on it though because of once again the height issue. I'm hoping that with the right stock choice everything will finally come together.

So still learning things when it comes to this kind of project. So the next one will go a whole lot smoother. Thanks for reading and safe shooting.
