I went to my first-ever shooting competition today. I did not expect to do well, having never shot competitively before. The match is shot in three stages. In each stage, the task is to break five clay targets as fast as you can, using a .22 of any type. The targets are about 4-5” diameter at a range of 10 yards. Not having a .22 myself, I borrowed the owner’s tricked-out competition pistol with holographic sights. As I’m standing there I watch others shoot and some seem to be really accurate, while some are running out of ammo before they break 5 targets. Finally it’s my turn and I shoot the first stage, breaking all 5 with 5 shots in about 5.5 seconds. Not bad, didn’t miss any. Second stage I had a feed problem because the magazine wasn’t all the way in, so I got a horrible 15+ second time. Third stage comes and I pop off 5 shots, breaking 5 targets in 4.31 seconds – one of the faster times of the day. There were many oohs and ahhs from some veteran shooters standing around and the owner brags to his friends, “That’s one of my students – first time he’s shot my gun!”

So, I’m feeling pretty jazzed about how I did and I think I’m gonna buy a .22 tomorrow. Can’t wait for the next match, either!

Good shootin,' Blackbeard!

If the gun companies and the ammo companies would sponsor fun shoots like this around the country to expose folks to safe shooting events I suspect a LOT of folks like you would also be rushing to the store the next week to get a .22 also!

Alas, most shops and manufacturers are too absorbed in their own little tiny world of gun/ammo sales that they fail to promote like a cell phone company does to sign up new cell phone users.

WARNING: Timed, accurate fire matches can be addicting . . . and you'll see your skills improve, along with a discovery of what the best-working gear out there is!

Glad you had fun. Even though I'm a mediocre shooter at best, I love matches. Note the 2nd line in my signature.

What kind of .22 ya gonna buy?
