Today was the first really nice day that I had off in about a month, and I couldn't just sit at home. I pondered my gun choices for the day (not that I have alot of guns) and loaded up my Bulgarian Makarov and my Ruger 22/45 target pistol. I brought 100 rds of mak ammo and about 250 rds. of .22 ammo. That lasted about an hour. there was nobody else at the range, and my range has 3, 5 and 25 yrd shooting position when shooting from the firing line. I spent the mak ammo shooting 5 yrd rapid fire and used the .22 for some in front of the firing line stuff. I put 4 paper plate targets on a cardboard silouette target on the 25 yrd target board (Yeah, I know I'm cheap ) and did some rapid fire at various ranges. I shot standing, kneeling and walking. Before I knew it I was out of ammo. But wait, there's more I thought . I didn't want to resort to this, but I pulled my S&W 642 out of my pocket and unloaded 5 shots on Remmington 158 gr.+P lead hollow point into the target. After that I was like "OOH speedloader" , and shot the last 5 bullets I had. Now, going from a .22 semi auto to a .38 snubbie with +P rounds was about all I could handle. Anyway, it was nice getting out.

I was in the exact same situation today. Got to the range, unpacked everything, took it all to the firing line, and realized..Oh no! Had I forgotten all my ammo at home? Nope, disaster averted, it was back in the car. I got my 4 boxes of 50 rounds of .22lr, and my remaining .45 hydra-shoks.

When I got back to the shooting stations, there was an older guy and a little kid, maybe 8-10 years old who were setting up to shoot. They had forgotten all their .22 ammo at home too, so I gave the kid one of my boxes. He had a nice little youth model CZ rifle, and they had some fun. It's great to see kids shooting at the range.

Anyway, I ran 50 rounds through my rifle for the THR Virtual Shooting Match , shot the match, and put the rest through the pistol. I only had 4 .45 hydra shocks, other than what was in my magazine, so I shot 'em. I left the magazine full though- ya never know.

Always take more ammo than you plan to shoot. I keep 4/550 round boxes of 22's. 700+ rds of 45acp and a case of AK ammo in the truck at all times. I also keep a few odd boxes of 38, 9mm and 40 cal.

Dont' worry, I went straight home and had the .38 cleaned, reloaded and in my pocket before I even started cleaning the Makarov and the Ruger.

Because of what you said is the reason i need to buy ammo in cans now In lots of 1000 or greater.

When I was a police reserve and would go to the range, I would shoot the regular course of fire and then maybe some new action type course. The range officer would tell us to expend our duty ammo and issue another complete complement of duty ammo before we left.

I remember one time I had shot all my duty ammo and found that the new stuff was back at the PD in a locker. After that I always stashed a magazine or two in my car so I would not find myself in that situation. Our range was less than 5 miles from town but it was up a narrow road through a gate and a chain across the road at the upper end. You never want to be out of ammo in any case.

Now I shoot at a public range in town and I still make sure to leave a full load for each firearm I use. Just to be safe. We have more gang wannabes here then we ever had where I used to live.
