I am now the proud owner of a SKS! :D I went to AIM today and picked one up. It also came with a few pounds of cosmoline at no extra charge. So now I have been doing some reading on the best ways to get rid of the gunk off the metal and wood surfaces and I had a question for those of you with some experience in the area...

Most articles I have read so far suggest heat to dissolve the offending substance as the best course of action to take. I don't want to use the household oven or dishwasher for this purpose. And I would rather not construct a trash can heater for the job. I was wondering if a heat gun or blow dryer would do the job. Has anyone tried this, and of so, with what success???

Go down to your local pep boys and pick up a couple cans of automotive brake cleaner. After you remove the stock, you can spray all of the metal parts with this as it will dissolve/blast away the cosmoline and leave the metal perfectly clean. Make sure you coat it with a light coat of oil afterwards to protect against rust before you put everything back together. I was using BC gunscrubber ($9/can) before I discovered the brake cleaner is the same thing ($2/can)

Soaking the bolt in mineral spirits got the cosmoline out of that pretty good for me. I never did get the bolt apart.

Welcome to the SKS owners club! Super fun little rifles.
