My first try at powder coating cast boolits

I have not recovered any bullets but I shoot mostly handgun calibers which are probably far less likely to have issues. I have done the hammer test and I have zero leading regardless of the charge so, at least for the calibers I shoot, it is the ticket.

For different colors try Powder buy the pound. They sell some really nice powders. One of the best for this usage is super durable wet black. There are several vendors like this that are cheaper for powder and shipping but I can't remember their names.

Don't try the method where you mix it with acetone or mineral spirits... it clumps making a sticky mess rendering any bullets currently in the mix useless.

I have to revise my old statement. I tried some HF red over the weekend and mixing in acetone does work quite well. There is definitely a feel or technique to it that I don't have down yet however. I think the ratio of acetone to PC to Bullets needs to be tinkered with a bit or you end up with really thin coating or thick clumpy coating. Personally, I don't intend to work with that method more than I already have since the shake and bake strategy works so well with the red that I don't see the point.

I did have one issue that was new. My first batch of bullets had been sitting out in the sun for about 30 minutes before I put them in my Tupperware to shake them. The powder stuck on really evenly and I didn't have to do a second coat. By the time I got to the second batch, they were sitting in the shade and the PC did not adhere so well. I had to do a second coat on those. Next time out, I will either let them sit in the sun for a spell or just warm them up in the oven. I do know you don't want them TOO hot or the PC melts right to the bullet in a glob.

I also found out the hard way that HFPC seems to be subject to UV light. Just leaving the powder open in the sunlight (the temp was only 77), it hardened the top 1/16 of an inch or so and I had to scrape it off.
