My friend got all excited, again. I don't know exactly why...

So he calls me, says, "Hey, I was looking at the ForjasTaurus website, and in Brazil, you can get a GX4 in .38!". I said, "You mean .38 Super?". "What is .38 Super?". I explaned to him what it was, and that it was highly doubtful a GX4 would be in .38spl. He was very disappointed. This is a repeat of his calling me a few years ago, excited that the Sig P229 was available in .357 Sig. I had to explain that .357 Sig and .357 Magnum are totally different. For some reason, he is just mesmerized with the idea of a semiauto that takes a revolver round, like a Desert Eagle, a gun he would never buy for price alone. Why this disappoints him like it does when he finds out the reality, I have no idea. Funny thing is, he has zero interest in the opposite, the Taurus 692 that takes 9MM and .38/.357, a gun I am interested in.

This follows his pattern of not actually reading anything in detail. I can't even guess the amount of times he's called me all excited or angry about something he read online, and he didn't read it, or actually understand it. We came to the conclusion a long time ago, that politics is something we should never talk about. His lack of any real knowledge about politics in general frustrates me. I want to yell at him, "Go to the library and read some books!". Some of his basic "understanding" of politics are totally the opposite of reality. Left wing, right wing, he's got them all blended together into a very whacky mix of nonsense. History is a subject he did not do well at all in. But he's very good at being angry about, well, nothing.
 
I’m 68 and spend a good bit of time online reading and researching. I also did the bulk of my family tree in the late 1970’s and early 80’s with books, microfilm, and in person interviews. It amazes me with so much information available now that folks don’t even try to find out online what kind of snake they saw, they ask others online……..there is no real excuse for lingering ignorance with all that is available. Folks will join forums and ask questions that could easily be answered if they used the search functions. That said, I am truly grateful for the many seasoned gun owners who have years of experience that we can interact with on this and other forums !
 
Hey, it is easier to ask a bunch of strangers on the internet than it is to look stuff up for yourself.

I sometimes get hung up in catalogs for products I don't even use.
I sometimes get hung up in a game of Twenty Questions where the OP does not give detail or show pictures.

A friend was recently given a "Get this GUN out of the house!" .32 S&W revolver... and the .32 Short Colt ammunition Grandpa had loaded it with.

That is a often repeated statement from elementary and secondary school back in the 50s and 60s and is meant to encourage curiosity among children who didn't have access to the resources currently available...or who were overwhelmed by the card catalog and Dewey Decimal system in the library .

Now adays a stupid question is one where you haven't done any research or you don't believe any of the 20-odd answers you've already found and are hoping to find someone else who is delusional enough to believe what you want to believe.

It is almost as bad as the often quoted, "The customer is always right"...unfortunately they always forget the second part of the full quote, "...in matters of taste."

He's not really a 1911 type fan at all, that's something we share. He constantly gripes about guns we can't get in the US. Now if it shot .38 spl, and was cheapish, he might bite.

He's been doing it often enough lately, reading something without understanding it (because he almost never reads the entire article or book, etc), and ranting and raving about whatever that is, that he got my frustration level to the point I posted about it. Since he doesn't read this, or any forums, regardless of the subject, nobody will know who he is, or that I'm ragging on him.

We saw an ad for one of the old Cox control line planes a few days ago, and he went into a rant about how he never could get his plane started, ever. I asked, "Did you check the glow plug to see if it was glowing?". "What are you talking about?". I said, You hooked the clip from the battery to the top of the engine, that's the glow plug. It has to get hot to get it started. So, did you make sure it was working?" "No, I wasn't that advanced!". No wonder his attempts at working on his cars have almost all resulted in disasters. If you have the glow plug glowing, fuel getting into the engine, it will almost certainly start. They are about as foolproof as it gets. He finally gave it to his neighbor, who had it crashing in minutes. I'm guessing a bad glow plug and/or battery. Heaven forbid he might read the manual. Or ask someone what the problem was. He's famous for owning vehicles, electronics, etc for years, and suddenly discovering by accident or youtube videos, "I didn't know it did that?", then arguing it wasn't in the manual. But it was, of course.
 
I've always wanted a 1911 in 38 special (wadcutters flush).

Reputedly, a much less troublesome option to the wadcutter Colts. My 52 rarely has a hiccup, and, even being well past skillful at bullseye, they are just interesting guns. The slide walks, rather than runs.

As regards asking questions on forums, sometimes it's just to see what answers it elicits. If we quit asking questions here, there wouldn't be much left to talk about.

That is one bigass .380. Are they avoiding a military caliber, going that route? Yeah, I suppose I could Google that.... ;)

Down here in a border state I heard that carrying a 1911 in 38 Super could put your citizenship in doubt.

I saw boxes of 50 38 Super sell for $50 at a gun store close to the border, and the guy behind the counter said they fly off the shelf at that price.

The .38 Super is seen as a workaround for 1911s in Old Mexico, avoiding a military caliber. The "citizenship in doubt" did elicit a yuk; Gringos aren't supposed to do that.

Yes, it is illegal for Brazilians to possess 9x19 firearms because 9x19 is designated a 'military' caliber, but, Brazilians can own 40 S&W, and IMBEL makes a 1911 style pistol chambered is 40 S&W. Maybe there are a lot of Brazilians with hand weakness or arthritus ( I don't know...) I just really would love to have one of those 380 pistols for the range :)
