Well,
I've been a Glock fan boy for a few years now. I've only owned 2 of their pistols to date: a G27 Gen3 and a G23 Gen4. The 27 performed virtually flawless, shy of a bad magazine spring that produced an occasional FTF.

I've owned my G23 Gen4 now for about 1 1/2 months and here's what I've experienced so far after 887 rounds fired:

Purchased 10/9: Shot about 100 rounds without issue

  1. 11/8 FTF - Blazer Brass 180 gr. FMJ (approximate round 150)
  2. 11/12 Stove pipe FTE - Winchester white box 180 gr.FMJ (approximate round 275) This may have been due to limp wristing while practicing with my weak side.
  3. 1/15 Inverted FTE - Winchester White box 180 gr.FMJ (approximate round 325)
  4. 11/20 Inverted FTE - Federal 180gr. FMJ (approximate round 500)
  5. 11/21 FTF with last round in magazine - Winchester White Box 165 gr (approximate round 800)

5 malfunctions within 887 rounds is a about 0.56% failure.

The weapon was cleaned thoroughly and lubricated after each trip to the range. It was lubricated according to the Glock owner's manual and not over oiled.

The recoil spring assembly has a #3 stamped on the end of it. I've read on some forums that this indicates something....not exactly sure what though.

Thoughts I've had regarding my experience with the G23 Gen4 so far:
  1. Shoots very accurately
  2. About the same if not slightly less recoil compared to my 40 cal G27
  3. Still prefer my Limbsaver rubber grip to the new heavier textured grip
  4. Conceals well with my MTAC holster
  5. Absolutely love the 13 rd magazine capacity. Never realized how much more I prefer that over a 7-10 round mag.
  6. Moderately concerned about the malfunctions experienced so far
I purchased this G23 to carry full time for personal protection. I have not shot my preferred defensive load, Winchester PDX1, much at all (not as much as I should) but what I have shot has performed without fail. That's been about 100 rounds. Since this is my self defense carry the malfunctions are a bit disconcerting as I want my carry gun to be extremely dependable.
But then, having a failure rate of .5% isn't too bad unless it fails at the most critical of times.

I'm planning on contacting Glock tomorrow and get their opinion/thoughts/feedback on the malfunctions I've experienced so far.I can share those with the group at that time.

Are there any other G23 Gen4 owners in the group that can add their experiences with this pistol as well? I would love to hear from others.

thanks
brad

oh wow. do i have some feedback for you. i'd say the first 400 rounds with my gen4 glock 23 went smoothly without nay problems. i'd say after 500 to 600 rounds i started noticing problems. ejecting being the most significant. i too shoot the winchester 180gr practice ammo. i had a gen3 glock 23 and it worked great. last time i was at the range i shot about 240 rounds. i was shooting the winchester 180gr practice ammo and some golden sabre 180gr hollow points. the golden sabres didn't perform so well. out of about 20 i'd say 4 or 5 malfutioned. they all did the same. they would be half in the barrell and half caught in the slide. (hope you can picture that). i'll try to take a pic next time it happens. IF it happens again. the same day i had several of the winchesters do the same thing. i was PISSY! now i will be honest i was shooting some of them out of the 22 round clip but that's no excuse whatsoever. it's a glock clip so it should still perform as expected. when all this was going on there was a gun range employee who also conducts permit classes. i asked him aobut it and waited til i had a malfunction to show him what i was experiencing. he said it was just cheap ammo. i find that hard to beleive. i will however try a different practice ammo and see how it goes. i also changed my self defense ammo to some hornadys and hope those will function properly as well. i also shot some of the winchester pdx1 bonded hollow points. 165gr and 180gr. both had teh same result. failed to eject. grrrr. another thing i find funny is that i too have a 3 stamped on my recoil spring. a 3 on the right side and a 0 on the other side. i will be going to the range the weekend after christmas and will report how the hornadys and the new practice ammo perform. let's please stay in contact and keep each other informed on how things go. i would love to see how another gen4 glock 23 is doing. oh and the failure rate? UNACCEPTABLE. PERIOD. i pay a lot of my hard earned money for my glock and for it to perform like that is just unacceptable. when i'm in danger and need a reliable pistol i can't have it malfunctioning like it has. needless to say i am not happy with it. i can't think of anything i am doing wrong so please keep in contact. message me your e-mail if you would like to as well.

not happy with what i am seeing with the gen 4's. thanks for sharing, and this is another thread that makes me glad that i stuck with a 19, and gen 3 at that. I hope everything gets worked out for you guys.

5 failures in less than 1K rounds is unacceptable in a defensive weapon. Two Glocks I used to own also had their issues, one even after spending months at the factory.

Meanwhile, my surplus beat-up looking Sig P6 and Israeli Hi-Power have never had a hiccup.
