It looks like every other Glock, but this one's mine :)

It has the "03" spring that some have had troubles with. No problems here!

The first 85 rounds were Winchester NATO 124gr. Ate them like a champ, no problems. I kept the remaining 15 rounds to load up into a mag for home defense.

The next 90 rounds were Winchester white box 115gr, no problems. I had 10 rounds left by the time the sun was going down, I guess I can use them next trip to the range.

Do 175 rounds tell me this pistol is flawless? Nope, but it's a good start. I was really nervous with all of the bad reviews I'd read recently on the Glock gen4's.

Before going to the range, I did do the following:

Field stripped and removed some of the "extra" copper anti-seize compound that had pooled up in places - no need for globs of stuff in the action! Put some Lubriplate 130A grease (i have plenty for my M1 Garand) on the little metal rails on the frame and on the barrel where it hits the slide. Just a little bit, enough to work into the metal. I also put some into the slide's rails. This has done me well with my 1911A1, too.

I also locked open the action overnight, just to try and let the spring loosen up a little.

While shooting, I did try a mag of one-handed shooting, no malfunctions. Heck I even tried "gangsta style" side shooting to the amusement of my friend - no malfunctions. I was just trying to see if I could force a limp-wristing malfunction, but nothing happened.

I'm so far very happy with my new 19 gen4.

I've read so many negative reviews of the gen4's and figured I'd chime in my experiences. I will keep in mind, though, that if I find some issues occurring like FTE's and FTF's that a call to Glock service may be in order for a weaker spring - the 04 spring - but for now, if it ain't broke, I ain't fixin it.

I too had no problems with my 03 spring, but I went ahead an ordered an 04 from Glock just because. It arrived today and I promptly installed it. I don't really see any down side to it, plus I now have a spare recoil spring. ;)

Gaston says leave the copper grease, shoot 500 rounds before cleaning.

Glad to hear from another happy Gen4 G19 owner. I have been very pleased with mine as well (10/20/10 "born on" date with 03 spring.) No malfunctions here, either.

Nothing wrong with your choice of guns but your choice of home defense ammo is another story.

Nato Ball as HD ammo is not a good choice IMHO. Enjoy the Glock and do your neighbors a favor and get some Speer Gold Dots or other quality hollow point. Nato ball with its +P like pressures are way to hot to be using in a situation where over penetration could be an issue.

Understood and agreed.

I simply retained the 15 rounds of NATO because I had a feeling they would function well (the 115gr rounds people seem to have occasional chambering issues - the 124gr not so much).

You are correct, they're probably way too hot for HD.

I currently have a S&W 19-4 snubbie .357 (made in 1980) that is my bedside HD revolver, with Speer Gold Dots .38 rounds.

I decided to buy some quantity of Speer Gold Dot 9mm and make sure those chamber and function okay. I don't have enough rounds through the pistol to feel I can fully trust it. Once I have that good feeling, I will probably move the Glock to HD and keep the S&W tucked away in the safe (still has beautiful bluing and is in great shape).

I just got rid of the globs of copper anti-seize that were pooled around the corners of the slide (some of it seemed a little excessive?). Then applied some Lubriplate at the slide rails, and some Rem Oil on the exterior of the slide.

How do you find your born on date? Mine came with a little envelope with 2 casings, which had a date and initials written on it - would I consider that the date it was made? Or is there a serial number check you can use?

The hot 9mm is one that hits a snag at times regarding penetration or not...

Many like the hot 124 fmj for that job, while others talk about the softpoint or hollow point to do the job, (and fail to penetrate walls or travel great distance after going through the target) so many deleted threads on the topic:p...

Why I have a 45 acp for home defense, HP...
Carry the 9mm as a ccw situation out and about...:uhoh:

I think the point is that ball ammo is not a good choice for HD. no expansion and over-penetration issues. Hollow or soft point are generally recommended and you seem to be right on track with gold dots.

The date on the envelope with the casings is exactly what I consider to be the "born on" date. ;)

And +1 on the Speer Gold Dots for SD/HD ammo.

Leaving a spring (mag or recoil) compressed or not will not affect it's tension. Cycling the spring is what causes wear.

I'm jealous. I waited 3 months hoping they would release the gen4. I gave up and bout a gen3 and they released the gen4 less than a month later. :banghead:

Racking the slide a few hundred times will do much more to loosen up the recoil spring. It's part of my usual break in routine for a new pistol.

I think you are better off with the Third Generation:)
They had police trade in gen 3 19's for $479 with night sights and 1 magazine. I got a brand new 19 gen4 with GSSF discount (LE price) for less. I seriously considered the $29 or so more for a gen3 used, but with used guns I always wonder what I'm really buying. And with LE trade ins, it's probably had a LOT of rounds put through it already.

Besides...needing a gen3 gives me a reason to get another one sometime ;)

If you get tired of the gen4 19, I'll trade you even for my gen3 rtf2 with a few bonus items thrown in. :)

Shooting one handed is much easier with the "half gangsta" hold. Flat sideways is a good way to get hot brass down your shirt:D

Stonecutter - Any updates? Any FTF? I'm looking to finally pick up a 19 and the dealer has both a G3 and G4. Thanks.
