Brian, glad to hear that your guns are out of the hands of criminals. Who knows when you'll get them back as they are "evidence" of the crime. They might be needed for the court trial. :uhoh: Anyway, at some point in time, they'll be back with you.

I'm unsticking the thread since they were recovered.

I sure as hell wouldn't leave 4k in cash in my glove compartment while I was soundly sleeping in a motel room... just like I wouldn't leave high priced weapons in my car when I easily could have moved them into my hotel room with me... I'm just an insecure person by nature I guess. I don't trust anyone lol.. but hell, it could be me getting my stuff jacked while I run into wallyworld for some 9mm on the way to the range... so don't take it personal.

But, I digress... they were still stolen regardless. I'M VERY HAPPY they were recovered. These "assault weapons' in the hands of normal people are extraordinarily dangerous :scrutiny: Frankly, I'm absolutely amazed they were recovered so quickly. Hopefully the trial goes as fast and you'll get your gear back soon... hell, the way things are going, by the time you get them back they may be worth 3x what they are now :D Consider it a "forced investment" :cuss:

same as the weeks before in Texas, Montana, California, Nevada, New Mexico

You brought those rifles into California?

I'd never leave such expensive weapons in the car overnight. I went to get lunch after a range trip last week and lest my M1A in the car. I kept looking out the window of the cafe to make sure no one was messing with my car.

What is the legality for bringing guns into hotels? I've stayed at a lot of hotels and I never noticed any verbage that says people cant bring guns into the rooms. I imagine they could have such rules, but I've never noticed them.

Glad to hear the happy ending Brian! :D

... thanks to this thread for the reminder about the NRA Insurance. Too bad that I didn't remember it when a handgun was stolen in 1999!

This thread may very well result in me getting paid for the gun that was stolen from me on August 15th (my Steyr S40)!

I had no idea about the $1000 insurance we get as NRA members so I talked to the claims folk today and am sending out all my paperwork so I may get paid yet :D

but this is the important lesson I learned:

If you're an NRA member and your guns are stolen you have only 90 days to from the date of theft to make a claim.

The guy I talked to on the phone said he had just talked to a guy a day or so ago that discovered this coverage but his gun was stolen a year ago so no dice.

Apparently most NRA members don't realize they have this coverage (and you can buy more than the base $1000 for $1.66/year per $100 of coverage). http://www.locktonrisk.com/nrains/armscare.asp

What is the legality for bringing guns into hotels?

It may differ by state or local ordinance, but the general rule of thumb is that if you are renting a property (house, hotel room, or campsite) it doesn't matter if its for one night or for ten years, while you are there, its private property and you can do pretty much anything you could do in your house. Some hotel's have policy's which may prohibit guns, which would be the same as a landlord including a no guns clause in the rental agreement.

Not that it matters but
overnight
same as the night before
same as the weeks before in Texas, Montana, California, Nevada, New Mexico

Only in SLC
inside job for sure.

What did you mean by "inside job"? How did the hotel staff know what you had in your car?

Yeah.....that is totally cool you got those back......I take it the thieves were not Mormon...lol....anyways....very nice looking firearms.....Nice

Carknocker, not quite. 30% of the population at point of the mountain are illegal aliens.

Larry,

I was talking about religious demographics. What religion do those illegals profess? IIRC, the article was in the Trib, maybe 2-3 years ago.

OK, did some research.

The Utah Department of Corrections said the number of illegal immigrants in prisons is not as high as believed. As of June 12, Utah had 322 noncitizen inmates serving time in prison for offenses like murder, child sex offenses, rape, robbery and other first-degree felony offenses. Of those, 260 had been identified by federal agents as having entered the country illegally.
"Less than 5 percent are illegal," Mitchell told the committee, adding that 32 countries are represented in the Utah State Prison system, with Mexican citizens accounting for 219 individuals. Vietnam has the second most, with 12.

Currently, there are about 6,240 people in prison in Utah.

This article is dated June of this year.

5%? Wow, I stand corrected. I was going off of what I was told by some guards. (reliable source, yes, I know).

Car Knocker, where in that article does it say that the prison population mirrors the religious affiliation in the state? Didn't see anything about that.

Oh, I'm sure it does. Mormons (and I am one) have bad apples and nut jobs just like every other religion/organization out there.

With that, please, no more religion thread drift. Sorry I jumped in there.

lessons learned:
write down your serial numbers
don't leave ANYTHING in your car
don't ever stay at any Ramada's (less than helpful would be an understatement, I'll be interested to see which hotel employee it was )

Good advice worth repeating. Well, I dunno about the Ramada thing, but the others are gold.

As an NSSA member, I have access to Sportsman's Insurance Agency which provides great rates and coverage for registered skeet and trap shooters. When shopping for riders, floaters, etc. for my competition shotguns, I found there's a lot of loopholes, non-coverages and per-instance limits out there, so shop wisely folks.

In the literature from SIA, they mention simple prevention tips such as:

Keep your gun cases plain and no stickers on them
Never leave them in an unattended vehicle
Don't put NRA, NSSA, DU stickers, etc. on your vehicle

Basically, DON'T ADVERTISE TO THIEVES and don't leave guns where thieves can get them.

To the original poster - really glad you got them back! It doesn't turn out that way often enough.

My condolences. IF you ever get them back and find the bastich who took them, do us all a favor, pick one and MAKE IT FIT up his YAHOO(hehehe), and then make the sumbioch lick it clean!

P.D. No Help

"SLC PD has been no help."

I have noticed there is not much good to say about this P.D. or that P.D. whenever something goes wrong and it is not handled properly in the opinion of the keyboard quarterbacks . The guns get found the next day (I assume by post dates it was roughly 1 day) and not a word about good police work by the Detective and or his department.

Just a little observation. Go ahead flame away!

BozemanMt., were the rifle cases visible in the vehicle ... or did the thieves have to crack open a trunk???

Sam59,

From the link in post #59:

Last night police got a call from a Taylorsville resident who felt something strange was going on at Albertson's.

This morning police are giving credit to that observant witness.

Scott Miller, Taylorsville Police Department: "We're pleased to get these off the streets. We're pleased there are citizens out there who are concerned enough to provide us with helpful information."

Police believe the witness saw the men selling or trading weapons outside the grocery store.

Police used the tip to track down the thieves. They identified their suspects on store surveillance video.
