As ya'll know, I'm a Democrat.

Here's my latest in a series of letters to the DNC. It's the rough draft so it may have a few errors. Similar letters have been sent to the DLC and other party organs.

Democratic National Committee
Terry McAuliffe, Chairman
430 S. Capitol St. SE
Washington, DC 20003
Dear Chairman McAuliffe,
Thank you for your service to our party. I was heartened to hear recently that Democrats are backing away from gun control. I am equally encouraged at the sight of Democrats supporting the bill to stop frivolous lawsuits against gun manufacturers. The practice of disarming law abiding Americans because of the actions of a criminal few is ineffective and inconsistent with American values. In addition, the issue is a political loser, and has cost our party gravely.
Nevertheless, I am disappointed to see prominent members of our party continuing to push gun control. Specifically, the party leadership is trying to extend the ban on so-called “assault weaponsâ€. Meanwhile, candidates such as John Kerry don hip waders to pursue duck hunting while promising to enforce “sensible†gun control, in an attempt to have it both ways. The right to bear arms is not about hunting or sports - it is about a government that trusts its people, and does not practice collective punishment of the lawful for the actions of criminals.
I understand that many of the party’s core constituents support gun control. Reversing positions on the issue could cost votes. However, I think that most Democrats can at least remain silent or neutral on the issue without suffering too much. Many gun owners are slightly liberal union members. These are the same people who declined to vote for Al Gore in 2000 because he was perceived as being against gun ownership. If we can add these voters to our ranks it will more than make up for the loss of the gun-control crowd.
Above all, I urge you to work against any renewal of the 1994 Crime Bill, which banned so-called “assault weaponsâ€. If the party leaders continue in this direction, I believe Democrats at every level will lose many votes. One of them will be mine.
Sincerely,
