As ya'll know, I'm a Democrat.

*Waits for boos and hisses to die down*

*ducks incoming tomato*

Here's my latest in a series of letters to the DNC. It's the rough draft so it may have a few errors. Similar letters have been sent to the DLC and other party organs.

======================
Democratic National Committee
Terry McAuliffe, Chairman
430 S. Capitol St. SE
Washington, DC 20003

Dear Chairman McAuliffe,

Thank you for your service to our party. I was heartened to hear recently that Democrats are backing away from gun control. I am equally encouraged at the sight of Democrats supporting the bill to stop frivolous lawsuits against gun manufacturers. The practice of disarming law abiding Americans because of the actions of a criminal few is ineffective and inconsistent with American values. In addition, the issue is a political loser, and has cost our party gravely.

Nevertheless, I am disappointed to see prominent members of our party continuing to push gun control. Specifically, the party leadership is trying to extend the ban on so-called “assault weaponsâ€. Meanwhile, candidates such as John Kerry don hip waders to pursue duck hunting while promising to enforce “sensible†gun control, in an attempt to have it both ways. The right to bear arms is not about hunting or sports - it is about a government that trusts its people, and does not practice collective punishment of the lawful for the actions of criminals.

I understand that many of the party’s core constituents support gun control. Reversing positions on the issue could cost votes. However, I think that most Democrats can at least remain silent or neutral on the issue without suffering too much. Many gun owners are slightly liberal union members. These are the same people who declined to vote for Al Gore in 2000 because he was perceived as being against gun ownership. If we can add these voters to our ranks it will more than make up for the loss of the gun-control crowd.

Above all, I urge you to work against any renewal of the 1994 Crime Bill, which banned so-called “assault weaponsâ€. If the party leaders continue in this direction, I believe Democrats at every level will lose many votes. One of them will be mine.

Sincerely,

Mark - a well written letter. Literate, logical and to the point.

The right to bear arms is not about hunting or sports - it is about a government that trusts its people...

In light of what you are trying to accomplish and your intended audience the words you've written as quoted above are quite appropriate.

I would however hope that you don't believe that what you wrote is true. The 2nd Amendment is about protecting the people from a government they no longer trust and has nothing to do with government trust of the people. In fact IMO it is quite evident by the actions of government (politicians of both parties) that they don't trust the people and that is exactly why they chip away at the 2nd Amendment at every opportunity.

Play their game, say the words that make them happy if that's what it takes to get them to leave the 2A alone but understand the truth behind what you say.

You're right.

I didn't want to say "we need guns to protect ourselves from the government."

That gets a lot of rolled eyes in my experience, but we all know that as a last resort it's true. I'll leave that argument to JPFO and gang.

A government just enough to trust its citizens with weapons (and other rights) shouldn't have anything to fear from them anyway.

I think it is well written for the audience. I am glad that you clarified the government trusting us versus us trusting the government. Because you are adressing authoritarians, it is best to let them think they are being benevolent.

The Constitution puts limits on what Government can do...not the people.

Some people need to be reminded of that....

Most of them are in Washington....

They should have a copy there somewhere!

It was a well written letter. But, why would you waste your time on a dying party? The Democratic party will go nowhere as long the the Clinton's are running it. They will not recover from all the law suits they started. The Cities suing the gun manufacturers, I will never trust them again.

I have from time to time voted Democrat. But, their platform is terrible in every way. I just can't bring myself to agree with the likes of Biden, Kennedy, Boxer, Clinton, Schummer ETC, ETC. ETC.

We got a letter from the Republican party. We refused to give to the Republican party, because our Govenor has not signed the House Version of the CCW bill. We wrote this on the return letter. They will suffer in the pocketbook if they don't go pro-gun all the way. IMHO.

Mrs. Toro

1 Peter 4:1,2
For as much then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin. That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.

From Silveri v Lockyer
My excellent colleagues have forgotten these bitter lessons
of history. The prospect of tyranny may not grab the headlines
the way vivid stories of gun crime routinely do. But few saw
the Third Reich coming until it was too late. The Second
Amendment is a doomsday provision, one designed for those
exceptionally rare circumstances where all other rights have
failed—where the government refuses to stand for reelection
and silences those who protest; where courts have lost the
courage to oppose, or can find no one to enforce their decrees.

However improbable these contingencies may seem today,
facing them unprepared is a mistake a free people get to make
only once.
The DNC might not be aware of this concept of the second amentment.
