Rep. McCarthy Registers As Democrat

The Associated Press

April 29, 2003, 3:10 PM EDT

Washington -- Rep. Carolyn McCarthy talks like a Democrat, votes like a Democrat, and campaigns like a Democrat. But for the past six years in Congress, she’s actually been a registered Republican.

McCarthy, a Mineola nurse who ran for Congress on the Democratic line after her husband was shot and killed while riding the Long Island Rail Road, has technically been a Republican until very recently.

Her spokesman, Mark Sokolove, said McCarthy changed her registration in early April, officially becoming a Democrat. Sokolove would not say why she kept her Republican registration for so long, or what prompted her to finally change it.

She became a gun control activist in 1993 after her husband was killed — and her son badly wounded — in a spree killing that became known as the “Long Island Rail Road Massacre.â€

She unseated the Republican incumbent in 1996 and went on to win three re-election campaigns.

New York State Democratic Party Chairman Herman Farrell said McCarthy’s core issues — gun control, education, and breast cancer initiatives — “reflect the principles and values of the Democratic party.

“While this was a deeply personal decision for Carolyn, I am pleased that she made it,†Farrell said.

I'm not kidding, I literally had no idea she was a Republican. Never even questioned it.

I guess that's what happens when you ***-u-me.

This has been a known fact for some time on Long Island. The Nassau GOP was not going to let her run on a gun control platform - so she hooked up with the Democrats (the traditional underdogs in Nassau) and ran with their shill donors backing the entire thing.

Her changing of parties was just a formality. She hasn't been a Republican in a long long time.

The only reason I think she wins again and again (the NY 4th CD is a Republican district) is because the local GOP never bothers to run anyone competent against her. They see the race as "not worth the effort" because there is not a lot of patronage available from a member of the house - a few jobs at most.

Can someone please remind me as to why I am living here? :)

The reason why you live there MJ is simple... When we(folks who live in less restrictive states) hear how bad it is in your state, it makes us more appreciative of our own freedom. Keep up the good work and thank you for reminding me that living in Oregon is pretty darn good! In all seriousness, I advise you to gather the flock and head for greener pastures, I believe there are some hard times coming for us all.
