My Mauser 98K.....What did I buy ???

I have a nice collection of US WWII M1 Garands and Carbines. So I thought I would buy a Mauser 98K to keep them company. The photos below are the rifle I bought on Gunbroker for $375. Can any of you experts tell me what I bought? It is suppose to have no import marks. Good bore. Late 1944 production. Oh...........The dirty birds are not peened.

It certainly looks like late war production with the rough machining of the receiver. Usually, a close up of the top of the front receiver ring will reveal manufacturing information of when and where. I can't make out the markings in the one shot showing the receiver.
That's a bit of money for that I would think, but I'm no expert, and they will only appreciate in value.

Can't wait for an expert to give some information on this. This is suppose to be a WWII German Mauser right? I'm wondering why it has a straight bolt, so many sling swivels, doesn't have the standard sling cutout on the rear of the stock, and a bunch of other things that don't make sense to me.
 
I used to have a DWM made export Mauser (1930s vintage) that had that same type of stock and sling swivel set up.

Does the bolt match the receiver?? What are the receiver markings??
 
Wll it looks like a VZ24 with Nazi proofs. Just look up VZ24 on the net lots of info there. The Nazi's used lots of them.
 
It looks a LOT like a Steyr Werke M29 made in Austria for Germany. Can you find the manufacturing code 660 anywhere on the rifle (or ANY code)?

According to Wikipedia they stopped making the VZ24 in 1942. Just wondering since this one apparently is stamped 1944.
 
Definitely not a G29o, and not a K98. I'd guess it's a bitsa, made from a K98 action and a VZ-24 stock and sighted barrel. I'd ask on Gunboards, though, since I'm far from an expert.

Could maybe be a Czech postwar export cob-together.
 
These are the sellers photos. I haven't got the rifle yet. It clearly says Mod 98 on the side of the receiver. I can see 44 on top of the receiver. Looks like BYF above it. Hmmm............I wanted a German 98K........Not a VZ24 !!!
 
It looks like an Obendorf action, (byf) in the auction pictures, with VZ style parts added. Check the headspace if you plan on shooting.

So, can you get out of the deal since it's not what was advertised, or is this a case of buyer beware - you (theoretically) should have confirmed before buying?

I would contact the seller and try to get out of the deal since it's not what was advertised.

The 3rd photo shows a MOD98 receiver. It is in a VZ24 stock. Hard to tell from the phots but the receiver ring appears to be scrubbed. Possible some form of Russian capture or a good old American mix master, gun show special.

If you want a MOD98 and not break the bank, look for a Yugo capture MOD98/48. These can be found in very nice condition for around $200. Some have new barrels, most retain a few dirty birds. The ring well be scrubbed and a Serb crest stamped.
Here's a $160 Mod98 I found on Gunbroker.
