I ended up buying this 28-2 Highway Patrolman today. Overall it's in pretty good shape, but not perfect. Serial number is in the 91XXX range, so I'm guessing early 70's? Just thought I would share and YES I know that it needs some wood stocks. I also bought the belt for $20 at a gun show yesterday, now I need a holster :D

Nice, but you need "Stocks" not grips;)

It's OK I dislike the term also. Stocks are fictitious pieces of paper you buy and lose money on. or the butt end of a rifle.:D

Is there no Letter like N before the number??

The 28-2 started in 1961. The N started in 1969

The only other change on the 28-2 was in 1968 when the wood Diamond grips were eliminated.

My revolver "stock pile" is doing just fine lol.

There's a N prefix before the number. I'm guessing 73ish?

N900000 would be 1982 to 1986

I thought there would be a letter, there were S before the N , No Letter would a "pre Model Number"

1986 was the last year for the M28 HP

Either way it's still 1982-1986:D

Now you need a shiny version a M -27

The grip harvesters got to you gun, as they do many, should be illegal!:(

Original grips especially Diamonds, can cost as much as a gun!

I like the pacmyers on my 28s. I usually take the wood off and put them on.

I do also, but I like to have the factory grips for photos and to know the gun is complete.

I will add it to my list :)

Current Want to buy list:
2.5" Stainless Python
4" 617 pre-lock
4" 686-4 Plus model
6" Diamondback 22
2.5" S&W Pre-lock (model to be determined)
M-27

You made a great buy and it looks to be in very good condition. While wood grips are pretty, those rubber grips are nice for shooting.

There is purtier S&Ws but there ain't any better ones than a model 28

You did just fine.

Howdy

Very nice Model 28. It looks like it has hardly any wear at all. Just a very faint line around the cylinder (which is normal, don't sweat it). I can't even see any holster wear at the muzzle or high points of the cylinder.

Yeah, S&W likes to use different terminology than everybody else. The firing pin is the Nose, the chambers are Charge Holes, the thing that stops the cylinder from spinning is the Cylinder Stop, not the bolt. I don't sweat the details of part names, but I do love Smiths.

Nice. I have one with a 4 inch barrel and the same grips. These are great shooters . You are really gonna like the trigger on this one.

I have a 4-inch 28-3 I bought LNIB a couple of years ago. I don't think it had ever been fired. The serial number dates it to mid-1985. After spending a bunch of time unsuccessfully trying to find original target stocks for it, I bought a set of Ahrens cocobolo "retro target" stocks from Brownell's. Now, if I could just find a target trigger and hammer I'd be completely happy.
