My new 6.5wsm, now I need load info.

I got a very cool rifle in trade: M70 CRF, Broughton 6.5wsm in a Bansner stock, built by Bo Clerke evidently. Its unused, asfaik.

But, I'm no wildcatter, and can't find reloading info on the web.

Where would I turn to learn more about finding a starting point? I was considering starting with 6.5/.284 or .270wsm, and decreasing accordingly for 140 gr. boolits...

buckskinner, the only place I've seen data for them is on ammoguide.com but you must belong to the site to see the actual loads. But it's well worth it as they have loads for 568 cart's/ over 12,700 loads. Also have diagrams, comparison capabilities (either visually or ballistically), a ballistics program, etc. etc. Very good site.

Pick up a copy of "QuickLoad" or "Load from a Disk" both will allow you to figure out safe loads for almost any cartridge.

Buckskinner: I'd like to have your predicament! The two powders I'd consider for this would be Reloader 22 and Ramshot Magnum. Magnum is a ball powder that has good temperature stability. Ramshot could help with load data, they've been very good so far about working up data for cartridges when data is hard to come by. They've had data for Magnum in 6.5 X 284 in their past manuals, but now show Hunter for the cartridge which is a ball powder with a burn rate very close to R-19. Between R-19 and H-4350. They claim it is the LEAST temp. sensitive ball powder available to handloaders and rivals extruded propellants in that regard. It gets recommended for the Short Magnums that have a bit faster pressure requirement like the .300 WSM and 7mm Rem. SAUM. Magnum is recommended for 7mm and .270 WSM and the 6.5 WSM will have a pressure peak requirement equal or slightly slower than the .270 WSM. AA Mag Pro is another ball powder that might be worth a look. As far as extruded, R-19 or anything slower is applicable, but R-22, or even R-25 may be ideal.

One heck of a long range cartridge concept. I like the 6.5 X 284 cartridge a great deal and CZ will chamber rifles in it through their custom shop. It is catching on rapidly in long range shooting events. I've been curious to see if Winchester will legitimize the 6.5 WSM.

Try some surplus WC-860. Start 12% below the Acc.8700 data for the .270WSM.

This powder is fantastic in my .300RemUlt.Mag.
Bought 16lbs for $50 from Widners Shooter Supply. (Plus shipping/hazmat of course).

I tried to warn a Winchester rep. that they were making a mistake with the .25wsm at ".257RobertsIMP" ballistics instead of going with a 6.5WSM at .264wm performance. I'd have bought a 6.5wsm if they'd made it a factory round. Instead, I "rescued" a Weatherby .257wm and haven't looked back.
P.S.: It loves the WC-860 and 120gr bullets @ 3,300fps.
