My new AR arrived this past thursday and I took it to the local range saturday to sight it in. Accomplished that pretty quickly then went back Sunday to shoot in the clubs monthly CMP match. It was my first time ever shooting a venue like that, I had a blast and cannot wait to go back for the next match. I mew a great bunch of guys who were all very helpful to this newb. Now I just need to go out and buy some kind of timer so I can keep better track of time remaining and a few other odds and ends.

Welcome to the club. It only gets worse. As you see what works or does not work you will begin to tailor your rifle to fit your needs. I shoot Tactical Rifle matches and have a half page list of things I want to do to mine. Do you have pics?

welcome to THR

CMP is a good time. usually a pretty good folks there and you should try to attend camp perry once you get your gear reasonably squared away

make sure your timer doesn't make noise.

Welcome to the asylum. The AR bug can cause you to lose touch with reality, you may start talking in strange codes. You couldn't find a better group of individuals.

The rifle that I purchased pretty much already had all the bells and whistles that I wanted, but I will be adding some kind of adapter to be able to close the action from the right side for the prone shooting. Trying to snake a finger around and hit the release button was a real pain. Combine that with better clock management and I should be able to pick up a couple of extra points. My goal is to break 490 by the end of the season (two more matches). Camp Perry sounds like it would be a lot of fun to attend, but I can't say I have the extra time or funds to go get my azz handed to me at this time, maybe someday.
