my new carbine

hello
after some shooting with a marlin leveraction carbine at the gun range i went out looking for a carbine of my own , i found an ad at a gunstore and was immediatly struck by the gun , i called the seller and had it reserved.
after some paperwork etc i could pick it up today , its a uberti rolling block hunter carbine with a 22"barrel in .357 magnum caliber , i also have a smith 686,
so its very practical to have two guns in the same caliber.
i think its a kind of a rare gun , at least over here it is , the shop were i bought it is an uberti dealer and they also never had seen one before in this caliber.
at the uberti site there are still some hunter carbines , but different calibers
and with a rubber backstop , mine is brass , so its not made anymore.
i bought it second hand , but it looks like its never been fired at all , like new.
its a very little rifle , it measures some 93 cm overall , it almost looks like a toy.
i took it apart when i got home , and yes its italian , so i have to do some deburring and polishing to get it working in good order.
now im gonna search for a new sight , like a vernier tangsight or a skinner.

for comparison , this is an original rolling block , swedish made , in the caliber
12.7 x 56 , as you see its much longer and beefier build as the uberti.
i sold it cause i didn t dare to shoot it at regular base ... :banghead:

hello
today i got the chance to try out the gun , and i must say it surpassed my expectations .
for first i wanted to try it with factory .38 spec roundnose ammo.
i shot it at 50 meters and 100 meters [ some 50+ and 100+ yards ] , and at 50
meters it will group about the size of a fist , the group opens up greatly at 100 meters , but i couldnt see the target sharp with the org sights.
my thinking would be that with some light loaded . 357 mag cartridges
and a kind of vernier tangsight it will be very good at these distance , the gun seems accurate enough and is a joy to shoot.
all in all im very pleasantly surprised with this gun , i cant wait to shoot it again.

this is what i came up with for this gun :
a 170 gr semi wadcutter from lyman "elmer keith style " wich i cast myself , from a lead / tin alloy and size to .358 .
left would be the casting , middle casting sized and lubricated and right
a factory bullet , but i never use these , it was given to me.
the lube by the way i also make myself , its 50 / 50 beeswax and molycote br 2 grease mixed together and poured warm in the lubricator .
as you can see i use the ram prime die for all my reloadings..

and now a foto from the finished cartridge , the . 38 spec is for comparising
it has the wadcutter bullet from lyman , and i also cast these myself.
so the cartridge you see is a .357 magnum case , cci 500 primer ,
4.5 gr of alliant bullseye powder and the previous mentioned swc bullet.
yes i know its not a full power magnum , its more a pepped up .38 spec .
cant wait to give it a try sometime next week !

Whoa, cool rifle!

I don't know if we even get a rolling block .357 Uberti here in America--I can't find it on their website. The only inexpensive single-shot rifles here in America are break-action.

the bullet itself got me wondering though , im gonna put it in the reload section
cause im wondering about the upper groove of the bullet , is it a crimp or grease groove?

That is a pretty nice little rifle. I like to shoot .357 out of rifles. It is cheap, fun, and decently powerful.

Very cool! I hope you will have many hours of enjoyment from it. I've heard of but never seen the little rolling block in .357.

I cast a similar gas check bullet from a Lee mold. The upper groove is the crimp groove.

just got back from the range.
the cartridges i made really seem to perfom very well in this gun.
at some 50 yards i get a grouping about a fist wide , and i took my glasses with me this time , so now i know that the groups at a 100 yards+ aint bad either !
i think the only thing that this gun badly needs is a decent sight , as the org.
buckhorn sight isnt that clear to see at longer distance , plus it tends to slide
from side to side a bit , and certainly down , as the "wedge "moves under recoil.
i ordered a tangmounted vernier sight , i think it suits the gun way better , as
accuracy seems to be good .
i went to the range with a badge of 50 cartridges , but the gun ended up with more than a 100 shots through it , as other shooters all want to try this little gun , and brought their own ammo .
there was even a guy who hasnt touched his own swiss k 31 all evening , cause he was to busy with this carbine , and he clearly liked it a lot !
i think the 4.5 gr bullseye powder and the 170 gr swc would also be a great cartridge for leveraction rifles too.

now after shooting some 400 bullets through this gun , i guess that it will be safe to say that the load of 4.5 gr bullseye really seems to do very well with
this little rifle , in fact , because its a very light gun its almost as if you were shooting a much powerfull gun.
i ve traded some of my ammo with some factory .357 magnum cartridges , and me and the guy i was trading with both liked the reloads much more.
i don t really need much power for plinking at a 100 yards , the reloads have plenty. the other guy had a rossi leveraction by the way...
there is no visible leading in the bore after a shooting session , i do clean my guns after a shooting, so its definitly a big plus , as i cast my bullets "soft ".
the rossi lever action also performed very well with the reloads , i must add
that i put the cartridges in by hand , as with the rolling block , the 170 gr bullet
makes a rather long cartridge , so i didnt try to cycle it as it wasn t my gun.
all in all im very pleased with this gun and reloaded cartridges !

There is something very satisfying about the Remington Rolling Block action. And the .357 Magnum is indeed a very nice chambering. My congratulations on this find and your comprehensive efforts in shooting it!

The comment someone asked about having it reamed to .357 Maximum did not escape my attention -- just as Rolling Blocks came in different sized frames, I have always wanted a standard pistol cartridge sized frame lever-action that would work with a .357 Maximum cartridge.
