My new custom Colt SAA just arrived

It came in Friday from the Colt Custom Shop.
Everything was done just exactly how I asked.
The American Scroll "B" coverage (1/2).
My signature on the back strap.
Beveled cylinder.
And the front sight, man is it nice. Three gold lines inlayed for elevation just like in Elmer Kieth's book SIXGUNS. The Colt Custom Shop (a guy name Steve, I think) did a fine job on it. What a neat sight picture it makes. I cannot wait to shoot it

It is a 44 special, 4 3/4" barrel, blued and color case hardened.

I haven't figured out how to post a picture here yet.

It took about 16 months, but I knew that and was willing to wait, besides it gave me time to gather the money. In anything when you ask for so many details on something it usually doesn't get done the way you might expect, not on this COLT SAA.
The timing is perfect.
My thanks to Paul of COLT, he communicated the order and it is beautiful.

As soon as it stops raining cats and dogs I'll be out shooting it and see what she does. If it shoots as good as it looks...........then:)
 
If it's a small enough file, just go to post a thread and go down the page and hit "manage attachments", then a wizard will pop up for you to find the file. Find the file (picture) and click on it to attach. It'll take a bit to upload. Then finish your post. Pretty simple, but a huge file won't work. I think the limit is 225kb or something. Shoot it in 640x480 and it'll fit, though. Sometimes I'll shoot it in 1.3meg pix and crop it for better resolution and close up.

Now, post the picture, dangit!:D
 
Your picture editor will also allow you to reduce the pixel count which reduces the number of bytes in the file. I find that for most purposes around 600x400 does a good job and is a reasonable size for uploading.

BTW, if you are planning to shoot that gun (!!?!?!) and Colt didn't do it, I suggest you see if a good SA smith can reduce the cylinder bolt spring and prevent or at least reduce the gouge the bolt makes in the cylinder. Colt should have adjusted the gun so the bolt drops in the leade*, but even there you can get a nasty looking gouge with the normal strength spring.

*If they didn't, and the bolt drops ahead of the leade, boo on them and I would convey my displeasure. That ain't no S&W where the drag mark is expected and acceptable.

Lets see if these two pictures come out.
About the timing, the bolt comes up right at the lead, but I don't like the trigger bolt spring, it's to heavy. But I have a Heiny wire spring to replace it with. I'm use to very light triggers. I suspect Colt has to be careful about liabilty and so called hair triggers.

I tried it out this morning at 25 yards, sitting, all 6 shot groups,
with a 6 O'clock hold, using the top gold bar.

My plinking loads of 4gr Bullseye over a 160gr cast bullet are all in the black for a 5" group.

8.5gr Unique over 180gr JHP xtp bullets printed a 3 1/2" group in a triangle pattern mostly in the black.

I put in the lighter trigger/bolt spring = much better.
There is a paper that Colt says they have to send out and don't necessarily agree with, in the box that is from their attorney general . Long winded paper says this gun is dangerous and will fire if dropped, bla bla blah..

I'll work on my loads and shoot it some more today.
 
Pardon my ignorance, but what, exactly, is the benefit of the 3 gold bars (i.e., significance if aiming to one point or the other)? I only have DA's, and it isn't really an issue. Just curious.

And oh yeah......

When you start shooting past 50 yards the 3 lines give you elevation reference points on your front sight. Without them you are just guessing and not consistent.
Look at a copy of Elmer Kieth's book SIXGUNS. A wealth of info in there for revolver shooters that still holds true 76 years later.
With my old Colt SAA I can hit steel or coyotes at 100 to 235 yards. Once I missed a coyote at 330 yards by 12" and thats where I had the front sight when I touched it off, all the front sight up till I had barrel radius beginning then back to the base of the sight. If I had just put hair behind the front sight it would have connected.
It's a fun challenge and I can always have the Colt with me when I cannot have a rifle handy. Also there are alot of misses and few hits at that range. But when you hit you know it. With the new gun and front sight I hope to have more hits.

I STILL can't get over how beautiful it is. A legit, Colt-brand SAA, with Colt-custom engraving. Dude, I envy you.

You ever need an organ donor, you know who to call....but you'll know what I want in return (sense a recurring pattern here?):D

How do you clean it without marring the engraving? I would think that after X number of cleanings, even with the gentlest methods, the artwork might show signs of wear.
 
Thank you all for the compliments. I just was patient and the order took along time so that helped. You put about 1/2 down payment. A Colt like this cost about $2000. Just put it on the card, thats what I did on the second 1/2. My wife says this is my jewlery since I don't wear any and the wedding ring is a old double 12ga that hangs over the door now.:D

I always planned on using it, it won't sit in the safe, so it will get some wear on it.

I do not yet have Sixguns so can you start a new thread explaining in more detail the techniques of long distance shooting with SA guns?

I would like to know more about how to use the gun and sight you mentioned. Also, optimal barrel lenghts, loads, and stuff you've learned that was not in Sixguns.
