My new MAS 1949/56 from Empire Arms. Where can I get a steady supply of 7.5 French? I found some at WGA that is linked, and some on Gunbroker. I like Gunbroker, but I don't want to use it as a primary source of ammo, and I suspect that WGA's may be corrosive (not positive). I don't reload, so that is not an option (in the near future anyway).

Southern Ohio Gun used to carry surplus 7.5 from... Syria or some other wackey former-french colony.

In any case, you're probably better off reloading 7.5 french now adays. Florida gun works has some. But at nearly 60 cents a round... :neener:

Sometimes you'll pick up a good deal at a gun show. Just a thought...

The MAS-49 has a 10 round detachable magazine. I'm pretty sure it can be stripper clip fed.

Well see for yourself. Looks like a stripper clip guide to me. :)

Edit: They're definetly stripper guides, the MAS takes 5 round clips.

Overall the guns pretty neat, too bad it's chambered in an antiquated and strange round.

Florida Gun Works doesn't do anything for me. I think they are over priced. I just bought the same ammo from WGA for 96.99 for 220 rnds. Free shipping.

They have 10 round detachable mags, that can be loaded via stripper clips while in the rifle.

Converting to 308 would void its C&R status and make me a criminal, so that's out.

And? Plenty of 03FFLs customize C&R rifles. Doing so means you can't sell them as C&R anymore and that they're no long C&R rifles (so if you can't legally own them as you'd convert them, you can't do so)

monsternav, if you modify a C&R gun thus making it no longer C&R, all you have to do is make a note in your bound book that on X date you did Y mods and this gun is no longer C&R. (If you dispose of it I'd still make a note of that date in your bound book as well, but technically you've "disposed" of it when its no longer C&R).

Only crime would be to ship a modified (and no longer C&R) gun to another C&R FFL in another state.

Monsternav,
I do not think you have a new French Mistress, A Mistress is usually a lady of some refinement and breeding, that thing is a whore pure and simple!

Grafs is having Hornady make up some 7.5 French. Not cheap but it shoots ok.
Brass has been a bit off spec for reloading (small primer pockets) but otherwise pretty decent. They are also importing some from CZecho howeveryou spellit :D

Sam

OK. My mistake on the C&R stuff.

How about this: I will shoot it, but I am also a collector, and I don't like bubba-izing perfectly good weapons. If, someday there is no more 7.5 French, I would do it, but not now

I have owned both 7.5 and .308 versions of this rifle....keep the 7.5.

The .308 conversion(s) I owned ripped case heads off during extraction...it was not pretty. The 7.5, though "antiquated" is still produced by some and you can get it with regularity.

Enjoy your new mistress...wish I would have never sold mine, but I say that about all my rifles I buy/shoot/trade/sell.... :D

The .308 versions-------suck

Call Graf's and take up handloading.

Mine is a thing of beauty----full power battle rifle----on the cheap :D

So... when you bought that it'd never been fired and only been dropped once? I can't believe nobody got that in before now. Really though, I hope it serves you well.

OK. My mistake on the C&R stuff.
Well you can't be too careful about such things ... wouldn't want your kittens stomped, wife shot or house burnt down (with you in it) :scrutiny:

Do you get the quarterly FFL newsletters? I recently started getting these from the ATF ... while they tend to be more focused on Type01 FFLs there is good info in them and I've been saving them in my bound book.

Got busy yesterday and didn't check in.

Spoon: Doing a little research before i bought, I heard nothing but horrible things about 308 conversions. Of course most seemed to be by Century so...
However the JPFO link had some info about making the gas system adjustable which might help, also that McCann total conversion was interesting.

rugerfreak: I am really not supposed to keep bulk powder in a multi-family dwelling (apartment), so handloading would be difficult (info from a local firefighter who shoots IDPA and 3-gun with me). I guess I could keep it in a storage locker. edit: Not that cheap for me, mine came with everything, including the scope and mount.

The Kidd: :neener:

Zundfolge: Thanks for the first links. I've gotten 2 of the ATF newsletters. Saving them also. And yes, you can't be to careful. I don't think they'll burn down the house, but the ATF seem to be able to change its mind after the fact as to what's legal and what's not.

i bought a mas 49 about a year ago. had problems ejecting, stove piping...apparently it was the ammo. bought fnm 11g, 170gr and it sucked. bought same manufacturer 9g, 139 gr and it functions fine. i bought mine w/all the accessories very cheap. looked brand new, no scratches, still packed w/all that annoying grease...just looking for a good scope mount for it. as far as .308 conversions go, ive heard they mainly sorry attempts. the ammo is not too expensive to buy, you just cant go as crazy as youd like. need to get a reloading press. any ideas on a good all around press (pistol and rifle).

For sale. French military rifle:

Never fired, Dropped once.
I've NEVER EVER heard that one
It's a thread about French military rifles. It is a formal rule on THR that someone has to make that joke in the thread. It was just his turn.

Mike ;)

Wow! great looking gun.... I shot one a while back and was very impressed with the overall experience. Nice affordable MBR in a larger caliber and the price is well within most peoples budgets..... Thanks for sharing.
