I was at my local gunshop this week looking for a cheap AK. This GP Wasr 10/63 had just come in. Price was $426 plus tax. The Wasr looked a lot better than any previous Wasrs I had seen. No cant and the finish looked decent. So............I put my credit card down on the counter and took it home with me. It came with the usual stuff. I am glad I bought this one because all the ones I saw at the Salem Va. gunshow this weekend weren't nearly as nice. Now to shoot this bad boy...........

Hey hey, welcome to the club. :)

I like that you posted pics with the 20 rounders as I was interested in buying some (easier to shoot prone) and wondered how they would look. Thanks!

If it is anything like mine, you have just bought yourself a reliable, go-to rifle that you'll enjoy shooting. Good luck, and update with a range report!

Congrats on the WASR. I think that was a good price becasue the lowest I've seen them for online is $379, and by the time you factor in transfer fees and shipping, you are at or above the price you paid.

I'd snap one of those up in a heartbeat at that price, especially if it was extra nice like yours. Unfortunately, I haven't seen any around where I live.

Got one about a month back; wood was ugly esp. on the lower forestock.
Mine shoots well.

I'm waiting for someone to buy one of these newer WASR's and have it be a lemmon... so far so good.

On a related subject--does anyone know of a cheap source for an optic mount for these things?

Based on that pic, it looks like they built your WASR out of a surplus parts kit! That's pretty awesome!

I bet it should be an excellent gun. I know I love mine. It may not look as pretty as an Arsenal but it goes bang every time I pull the trigger. :D I wish mine had the Romanian arsenal stamp on it like yours, though.

Your wife is going to be upset that you put that greasy pig on her beige carpet!

My WASR needed about 200-300 rounds before it would cycle reliably. No problems since then.

Neo-luddite, check out www.kalinkaoptics.com for optics and mounts if you want to use the side rail. Another good, popular option is the Ultimak gas tube. I'd avoid dust cover mounts as they can wobble and lose zero.

I have had good luck with a BP-02 side mount made in Belarus. It locks up tight and sits close to the receiver. The BP-02 has a Pictanny rail on top to mount your scope on.
:)
Here is a photo of my Saiga with a BP-02 scope mount.

Congrats! I love my WASR GP. Much better quality and accuracy than most would have you beleive. Hard to beat for the price, IMHO. Plus, for around $10 and a half hours minimal effort, you can easily "pretty up" the wood and finish if that floats you boat. A just did a quick light sanding on mine, then a thin coat of Minwax stain, and real thin coat of tung oil on the stock, and some Rustoleum High Temp BBQ paint (good to 1400 deg F supposedly, which I'm pretty inclined to beleive is true since it's BBQ paint), and it was huge improvement on the looks and durability of the finish, and cost next to nothing, and took no time at all. I suspect you'll be very pleased with your purchase.

I did add a TDI/CAA ergo grip to it, as they are just so darn comfortable, and a little "grippier", plus painted the bayo with the same BBQ paint for the heck of it just to match the receiver a little better (just didnt care for the purplish color of the handle, and was sorta just screwing around.)
Here's mine with with the little refinishing mentioned.

+1 on avoiding dust cover mounts

thats how i mounted my optics, and it WILL move on you. it works for my purposes, i just want to hit a 9 inch plate at 100-200.

and as others have said, welcome to the WASR club. i doubt youll regret owning one. in the rare chance you get bored with its looks, there are uncountable options out there nowadays to trick it out. think of it as a more expensive 10/22 and less expensive AR.
