Would my CAI WASR-10/63 be 922(r) compliant with imported mags?

Right, I'm thinking of getting either the CAI WASR-10/63 from AIM surplus (spefically this one), and I want to know whether my gun will be 922r compliant even if I put in imported steel mags.

I'd also like to have a more general discussion about the WASR-10. My dad wants to get an AK-47. I advised him to fork over an extra 300$ and get the Arsenal SGL-21, but now I'm questioning whether the extra 300$ will be worth it. From what i've heard, there are some reports of WASRs having canted sights and occaisionally jamming, but I've heard lots of reports of WASRs functioning almost flawlessly, and that newer production guns have been better.

What do you guys think: Should my dad save some money and just get the Romy, or should he avoid the risk and just get the Arsenal?

And if the WASR jams, can I send it back to Century for repair work?

Yes, the Wasr 10/63 had enough US parts to qualify as American made, and thus can legally use any magazine (note that it comes with two surplus steel mags already). If it were me, I'd buy that and pass on the SGL-21. I like Romanian AKs.

It's really up to you and how much money you can spend, nothing wrong with either direction. Most WASRs are reliable and are a bargain. You rarely hear of one that jams. But do inspect it first hand if possible or better yet take a friend who knows AKs.

Normally AKs have 16 parts that are counted for 922r compliance and at least six must be of US manufacture. These six parts in the WASR are the pistol grip, trigger, hammer, disconnector, gas piston and muzzle brake. So you can legally use imported magazines.

i bought a wasr a few years ago for 400.00,it was a bargain. never had an issue,& is fairly accurate at close range(under50 yards)which was my intention when i got it. i think its mostly made in romania, then imported & the jimokee's :neener: at cia install the trigger group.theres not much else like it for 400.00 or soexcept a saiga,maybe....

The WASR's are assembled with US-made Tapco G2 trigger groups. A standard AK-47 has 14 countable 922(r) parts (15 with a removable muzzle attachment). Replace the trigger group, and that's down to 11 or 12. Replace the gas piston, and that's down to 10 or 11. Use a US muzzle attachment, and that's 9 or 10 and legal regardless of which furniture and which magazines you use. WASR's already come with all the parts to make it legal.

In my case, I decided I wanted K-Var olive drab furniture on mine, so my handguards and pistol grip are also US-made (it's an underfolder). That reduces it by a further 2, so I can use a foreign muzzle attachment if I want.

If you REALLY worry, you can buy US-made baseplates for your foreign AK mags. They sell them, and they're cheap. You just slide off the original part and slide the new one on. Quick and easy, and you're down 1 foreign part.
