Last weekend I picked up a Marlin Model 39 at the local gun show. It's an original 39 with the S prefix in the serial number and the star on the tang. The wood is pretty trashed though, and I'd like to replace it. I'm looking for some recomendations on where to get wood. I'm leaning towards this company named Precision Gun Works. Anyone have any experience with their replacement wood?

Also, I understand that you shouldn't run High-Velocity ammunition through these earlier models. If I just stick to Standard Velocity ammo should I be OK? Do any of you have one of these and have an ammo recomendation?

Thanks in advance! I can't wait to try this thing out.

The rifle should be shot with Standard Velocity ammo.
The "best" ammo is the ammo that shoots best in THAT specific rifle.
To find out what to shoot, buy a box of every brand of .22LR Standard Velocity ammo and test fire to find the one that shoots best, AND is reliable in operation. Then buy as much of that brand as you can afford.

New Marlin wood that will fit the older models is pretty much a matter of where you can get it. In the old days Fajen and Bishop made lots of wood for them, but now you have to take what you can find.
I'd say the Precision is the way to go. They offer a replica of the 1920's type Marlin 39 stock with the "S" shaped pistol grip.
I'd get the buttplate with it unless your original is in usable shape, and is large enough to be fitted without having to remove too much wood.

For a finish, you want an original look oil finish.
Here's a link to my oil type finish that's a lot tougher than Tung or Linseed oils.
