I've taken some advice I've gotten here and other boards about my latest purchase. So many people stated their M15's are their favorites, or at least among their favorites. This is my first 4" S+W. Since it IS going to be a trainer for my wife and her friend, I thought a K-frame with a 4" tapered was just enough gun and barrel, but not too much, and the adjustable sites just a little more visible/easier to use than the fixed sites of a Model 10.

As far as my use of it, well, I had a very tough time choosing between it and a 4" M66 (something I've always wanted). The main decision makers were:
a) I had the cash in my pocket for the 15 and would have had to go to a credit card for the 66. (OTD at $190 even.)
b) I have other magnums for carry or home/car/field protection, and I don't hunt, so I didn't necessarily need this to be a magnum...just a shooter.
c) I still see 4" and 6" M66's pretty regularly, at least for now. I can still get one in the future or get a 686 or 620 and be happy, but really good deals on M15's are, at least around here, fewer and farther between. The only current new, blued S+W K's/L's are the 4" Model 10 or 520.)

I still have trouble understanding why I'm so excited about such a basic gun. Plain Jane, 4" barrelled, blue 6 shot revolver. A tiny scratch here or there and some bluing worn off in little spots. Nothing to get excited about, right? Common, typical, well worn wood grips w/ S+W emblem-not exotic. All-in-all a pretty ho-hum day, right? But I'm PSYCHED and I can't wait to shoot it.

A few quick questions, please.
1)For you catalog owners, a date, please? (5K839xx)
2)The right grip has a 6-digit number stamped on it but it does not match the serial number. (4945xx) What's this number?
3)The bottom front and rear tips of the grip frame stick out a tiny bit past the edges of these grips, almost as if the corners of the grips got worn down over time. Are they supposed to fit 'perfectly'?

Thanks all and I apologize in advance for posting the same thing on another forum that I know some of you read.

Congratulations on your purchase of a very fine revolver - and at a great price at that. I have a 4" pre-model 15 and it shoots like a champ. I'm sure you'll have lots of fun.

You did great, both with your choice of guns and what you pay for it (usually, you only get one of those).

In my humble opinion, the Combat Masterpiece is one of the finest wheelguns ever made.

You got a great deal on a great gun.

Yep, it's a blued gun with walnut grips. They don't make 'em like that anymore!

The number inside the right grip is the serial number of the revolver the grips came off of. These are not the original grips to your revolver.
