This is a pic of my old model Ruger Vaquero in 45 Colt. Put it in layaway and paid $400 for it. Looks like maybe a box had been run through it, its in mint shape. It has the color-cased finish and doesn't have the lock under the grips. Serial # is 58-554xx . I am really starting to think this may be the rare Sheriffs model the barrel measures 3 and 3/4" and thats from the front of the forcing cone to muzzle. If this is the sheriffs model how rare is it and should I be sparingly how I shoot it or should I shoot it and enjoy? Also the timing issue does kinda bug me, where can I get the kit to fix it and would this ruin the value of the gun if I install it. Also this is my first Ruger single action, my other single action is a rough rider. The Vaquero doesn't have the 4 clicks, is this how Ruger single actions are or is there something wrong?

Thanks in Advance.

yes thats a sheriff, you will not hurt the value by shooting it more, have fun trying to wear it out.

power custom makes a free spin pawl,it will not hurt the value as you can return it to stock by putting factory pawl back.

Nothing wrong the original vaquero has the "new model" lock work.
"old model" is the factory term for the original trhee screw rugers, before transfer bars, that had half cock.
there really isn't an old model Vaquero.just Vaquero and New Vaquero

But this is one of the older ones where I can shoot the hotter handloads if I ever choose , right?

yes, It doesn't say "new" vaquero ,it'll handle the hot stuff

What timing issues are you having?

I guess that I could have said that better. With the cylinder in free wheel and it clicks, the chambers are not aligned with the ejector rod. I've heard this is normal for this model.

Ok; Power custom makes a Ruger Single Action Hammer & Trigger Kit that... well here's their description:
"Ruger Single Action Hammer & Trigger Kits
Allows for a 2 ½ to 3 Pound trigger pull for all new Model Large Frame Single Action Blackhawks, Super Blackhawks, and Vaqueros. Make Ruger Single Actions feel more like Colt Single Action. When on Halfcock, open the loading gate- chambers line up with the loading gate for ease of operation, spin the cylinder & hear the pawl sing. On Hammer draw you can hear and feel 3 postive clicks. Wolff Spring Kit includes 3 different reduced power hammer springs, (17lbs, 18lbs, and 19lbs), a reduced power trigger spring, and 1 extra power cylinder latch pin spring (minor modifications are required to some factory parts). Includes detailed instructions."
The kit is about $160
There is some info about here: http://www.curtrich.com/ruger.html

You could go with the Power free spin pawl as mavracer suggests or make your own: http://marauder.homestead.com/files/FreeSpin.html

BTW, congrats on a fine revolver:)

Regards,
Greg
