So, I picked this up at the gun show a few weeks ago and re-finished the stock. I stripped all the old finish off and applied Minwax Provincial oil-based stain. I took 0000 steel wool to lighten up the heavily stained areas and to hi-lite the wood grain. Finally, I applied a coat of Fairtrimmer's military Ox gunstock oil and hand rubbed it. This is the result and I'm very pleased with it. This gun has many dents and dings on the stock and the stain/steel wool really darken those areas to give the gun a lot of character. Unfortunately, this is a non-matching gun, but the stock has no cracks, and all the metal is nearly perfect except for the stock cap. The most appealing aspect of this rifle is how tight the bayonet fits. There is exactly zero play in the fitment and it's rock solid. I gave about $220 for it.

I love my Polish M44's.
Have 3 of them,2 new unissued(unfired,no dings or dents)ones and a beater
that gets lots of range time. I always keep my eyes open at the shows for the next one.

My 1st milsurp as a collector was an unissued Polish M44. It is pretty accurate rifle for a carbine (about 2-3 MOA). About 6 years ago, a guy was selling a crate of them for $50 each - they were rough but still was a great deal. Wish I had bought them all.
I think the Poles probably spent more time on fine finishing of the rifle than their Soviet counterparts.
You did a good job of cleaning it up and still having it display its usage after all these years.

Nice I just cleaned my M44 today and did the biggest bonehead thing. I put the bolt into the action without realizing the roll pin holding the trigger in place came out. It was a Bitty to get the bolt out without being able to depress the mechanism holding the bolt in place. I was able to fix the issue but it took awhile.

Thats a really nice looking M44, I'm jealous. I bought a Hungarian M44 on gun broker and am calling later today to finalize everything.
