This past Saturday I purchased a Ruger 10/22 for $139.88 ($153 OTD) at Bass Pro Shop in Harrisburg, PA. For more information on the outstanding price see this thread.

Since I was going to the Harrisburg gun show anyway, I figured that I would swing by BPS and pick up the rifle on my way.

At the gun show I purchased a Tapco T6 Stock Set ($80 OTD) and a somewhat cheap red dot for plinking purposes.

My cat Indy inspecting the rifle:

Indy also wanted to make sure that the sights looked all right. He seemed to be very upset that the rifle came with a trigger lock.

So here is my $268.00 plinker:

Sunday was range day and I shot about 500 rounds through the Ruger 10/22 and my single six. This is really a great plinker and a whole lot of fun. With the rising cost of ammunition… it’ll pay for itself in a few months.

I'm thinking about trying to get a few BC Steel Lips in the next few days as well. Do these seem to be the magazines that the 10/22 like the best?

Regards,

Mike

Thanks for the recommendation… Sadly, they seem to be out of stock.

I have heard good things about the TI magazines.

I would order the machined aluminum version, but $65 seems a little steep compared to the $35 composite version.

Thanks,

Mike

If you use the "cheap" brands, I recommend the "single-stack" variety over the double-stackers.

Also you may want to drill a little port in the mag so you can spray some silicone spray in there to slick 'em up. Otherwise a goodly percentage won't be 100% reliable.

I think I'm going to take your recommendation and just order the TI composite mags. I hope they catch up on production sometime soon.

I'll just have to live with the rotary 10 round Ruger mags until then. Sure makes my thumb hurt after a little while though.

It says on the tactical inc. website that the BC speadloader works... maybe another worth while investment?

Thanks,

Mike

I haven't tried the speedloaders. Couldn't hurt to give it a try.

It does get tedious loading the mags one-at-a-time.

This is the stock I really want.

The Evolution stock is really sweet... I really like the pistol grip option on the 10/22.

I went with the Tapco T6, and am pretty impressed with it's construction and ease of assembly. I figured that for $80 is was a pretty good option. I'm sure it's the envy of mall ninja's everywhere. :D

Sounds like a good price. You might pick up a couple hot lips mags to tide you over. They are about $12 here on sale and I haven't had any problems.

Iv'e been extremely pleased with my butler creek folding stock! is there something wrong with them that i dont know about?

Drew: Where can you find the hot lip mags for $12? I would totally pick up a couple to hold me over for a bit.

DScottw88: We were discussing magazine options when referencing Butler Creek and not the stock. As far as I know, nothing is wrong with the BC stock .

The Ruger 10/22 has a level of customability that is truly amazing. I've heard of guys taking metal airsoft gun bodies and putting the reciever into them and getting it to work. Result: an all-metal working .22 G36C, MP5, AK47 etc.

There are many other cool 10/22 kits out there. If someone PMs me about them I'll post them.

Mags- Butler Creek mags aren't the best, but they aren't too bad, either. I've got a couple of Steel Lips mags...
Stay far away from Ramline mags. Worthless. Some say the older production is better. Might be. I purchased one Ramline mag, and it was extremely hard to load and would not feed right.
Tac. Innovation are good, and especially the adjustablility.

Stocks- Dixie Consolidated makes the best bullpup stock. Don't even bother with the Muzzlelite bullpup stock. And Dixie Consolidated is in my state, SC.
The evolution stock set is cool. I've handled one.

Barrels- Green Mountain barrels are well priced for what you get, you can go more expensive and get a little more accuracy, but you can't go cheaper. Stay away from Butler Creek barrels, especially their Carbon Fiber barrels.

Iron Sights- Tech-SIGHTS are simply the best for peep sights. They are basically AR-15 sights, and reasonably priced. They also sell an adapter that lets you use the front sight on a bull barrel. The rear sight mounts to the two rearmost scope holes and the front sight mounts to the dovetail.

Other parts- There are many, many, replacment parts such as extended mag releases, better bolt releases, target hammers, etc, to add. I'd start with the three I mentioned, and also get a bolt buffer. I had problems with the screws vibrating loose even when I had them loctited.

How hard is it to make all of these modifications? Such as changing out the barrel and adjusting the trigger group. Also, after all these things are done what kind of accuracy can/will you get?

Bi-Mart. I think regular price is about $15 a mag but I picked up a couple 25 round clear single stacks when they were on sale for $12.

Very easy. Google for the diagrams and you can get instructions on how to do everything but it's a simple rifle to take apart. The barrel just takes 2 bolts to unscrew (after you remove the 1 bolt in the stock and loosen the barrel band) and pull it out.
1/4" at 50yds isn't unreasonable with good parts and good ammo.

here is my custom ruger 10/22 i make em, and there alota fun at the range everyone is li ke "what the heck is that" its a ruger G36c clone pretty sweet i think 2k520m.jpg
