It looks better with wood. Looks like it's shooting high and right, is that when it gets hot or do you need to adjust the scope?

I may need to adjust the scope. I was loosing light fast and having a hard time finding the crosshairs.

Deadduck,

With the temperatures you are having now, you must be somewhere in South Texas. I lived in Laredo, TX for 5 1/2 years. I miss the hunting, especially pig hunting where they can be hunted year round.

Central Tx., close to Waco. Its the time of year that one night is in the 30's the next its 60. Day time 50's,60's and 70's. Hogs are everywhere, right now its deer and duck season. Shouldn't have left.

I'm very pleased, I really didn't consider running steel through this carbine but hell if it will digest most of the steel its fed with the occasional hiccup that's good enough for the range and more shootin.

I enjoy my old 1986 Mini-30
Taken a bunch of deer & it shoots pretty good////////////
Here is 5.5" target at 50 yds. using Hornady 310 in my 308-----:)

It seems like it would make a fine hunting rifle or something you could use in a bug out role. It isn't going to be winning and bench competitions but it certainly shoots well enough for things that aren't paper. Even then it seems to do well enough. I've always thought the 7.62x39 had a bit of potential in the accuracy department, but was limited to the cheap ammo and mediocre bullets. I think this would make a great alternative to a .30-30 or the such and seems to shoot well to boot.

Very well. It feels like we so often get so worked up over which rifle will hold 1/2moa this or 1/4moa that without looking at any more of a purpose than strictly putting holes in paper. At 1-2MOA it is far accurate enough to shoot out beyond the round's effective range. All in all it looks like a great choice for many roles.

All I was hoping for was a 200yd and in carbine with enough punch to take a hog, deer or a 2 legged vermin if need be.

I'd say it's accurate enough for for those uses... might be time to find yourself a deer hunt!

Great review deadduck, I'm very glad to see that the new Mini is a much better gun than what we had previously from Ruger.

I've been a fan of the Mini design for a while but never bought one due to a whole host of issues...all parts are not commercially available - you must get certain parts factory installed by Ruger, magazine availability and price, parts breakage i.e. firing pins, etc. I've also heard that they beat up brass pretty good.

It appears they've solved the accuracy and magazine issues.

How did the spent cases look after shooting? Were they badly beat up?

deadduck,

I have read your reviews of both the Ruger Gunsite Scout and the new Mini-30 Tactical. In your opinion which is better suited for deer hunting, SD and SHTF. I like the simplicity of the bolt action on the Scout but also like the 20-shot clip w/ semi-auto of the Mini-30. Also, how does the Mini-30 compare in accuracy with the Scout?

Thanks,
Giant

"The magazine floorplate is stamped for the Mini-30, but the markings are finely cut and not immediately visible. Nowhere on the body is the cartridge specified as 7.62x39mm. It would be beneficial for Ruger to mark 7.62x39 somewhere, preferably where it can easily be seen."

Look at the second picture you posted. I'm not trying to be a smart alleck.

Love the report. Sounds like I'd love the gun since I love my Mini14. May add #5 to my wish list :)

DD357,

Just curious if you were able to document accuracy results on the GSR Scout @100yds to compare against your earlier results with the Tac-30. Of these two, the Tac-30 appears to be a better "do-it-all" rifle.

Thanks,
John
