I'm going to purchase a new S&W revolver. Problem is I can't decide between the two I've narrowed it down to. Both share the same price of $399, and with my limited budget, I can only afford one.

Options are:

A) NIB 642-2. It would be the only gun I have that I am able to conceal well. I'm looking to get my permit soon and will need a gun that I can carry. I have shot one and had no problems. I've also done a lot of research, including reading through both of the 642 threads here. Would be used for carry as well as some range fun.

B) LNIB 19-8. I don't really have much knowledge of the model 19, other than the fact that I like it for some reason... I've never shot one, but I can't imagine it would be a problem. The specimen is in fine condition and caught my eye at the store. It would be nice to have a revolver that could chamber both .357 and .38. Probably would not be able to conceal this one, though. This would most likely be a range/home defense gun only.

So which would you choose?

Well if your getting one for your CCW then the 642 makes more sense, but I still voted M-19 because they don't make them anymore and the prices for the used ones just keep going up and up...

642's are common as dirt. 19's are no longer produced and the prices are climbing.. That is a good price for a LNIB.. I'd grab it and get a snubby another day.

FWIW I carry a 2 1/2" Model 19 every day.

I have a 642 that I really like, but if it were me I would get the m19 if it had a 4" barrel.

Buy both?:neener:

Well if the 19 does not have the lock- grab it first. With the right holster it will be fine. The 642 ya can just pocket carry iffin ya want to.

BTW I have both a 19/66 and the 642. I do love to shoot the k frames and even enjoy the 642. I do carry the 642 quite a bit.

The 19 does have a 4" barrel and does not have a lock. It looks like it's never even been fired. I'm going to pull the trigger on one tomorrow.

I was really impressed with the 642 though. Nicer trigger than I imagined it would have based on all the evaluations I have read that said it was heavy.

If indeed unfired, I'd be running to that shop for the 19 ... The older K-frames rule; the supply is dwindling fast as the scavengers are circling ... and 399 would be a great price for LNIB here. New J-frames are a dime-a-dozen.

So was the 19-8 the last revision of that model? When were they made? I have no knowledge of the model 19.

I have a K frame (model 14) and a 642. I agree with most folks here that the K-19 would be the revolver that I would buy first.

If you do get the 642 make sure that you get the one that serves it's purpose and what it is that you want to do with it. They offer the shrouded, enclosed and fully exposed hammer. Enclosed only gives you double action (not fun for practice). Shop around as well. I picked up a few of them recently for $355 through a distributor. (tax and ffl more but still far from MSRP.)
Good luck!

Well, I couldn't make up my mind.

So I got both!

I picked up the 642 today and put the 19-8 on layaway.

Anywhere I can get some information on that particular model? I'm having trouble finding anything relevant here on the model 19.

Thanks!

642. It's a carry gun for a carry permit. 19s are neat, but they won't save your @$$ when you're out and about.

Look at it this way: buy a 642 to increase your odds of living until you can afford a 19.
