Well, here is the story...
I went into a Gander Mountain and started drooling over a mossberg atr 100 in .30-06. I didn't have the 300 for rifle and another 200 for a good scope, so I passed on the deal (also helped that the wife would have used it on me if I had bought it without consultation). The clerk asked why I wanted the mossberg, and I told him that the atr has demonstrated moa at 100y. With a good scope, I believed it could be a 600y rifle. Anyways, I go home and tell my old man about my encounter that he should go look at one of these if he is looking for an inexpensive hunting rifle. He goes upstairs and brings down his .30-06 and says you can have this one if you want it. I look back and it is a gorgeous garand. Now I just have to figure out how to disassemble it to clean it, who can point me to a good link. It isn't the carbine. It is made by international harvester.

sarduy,
Do you care to expound on that? I know the garand is used in 1k contests, but is there a specific reason I am lucky besides it just being a garand?

oh, and somewhere near 100 rnds, about 50% match and about 50% reloads with weights ranging from 44 - 47 written on them. I guess it is in grams, I haven't pulled out my scale to verify yet.

funderb,
They have two for sale at the wheeling PA cabelas for under a garand (rimshot please). One was under 600 before tax, and I would refinish the stock on that one.

OK, any suggestions on what to shoot animals with? Noslers, boattails, spitzers, shoktipped (guessing that is just a hollow point, couldn't tell from the picture), etc?

Sarduy,
Great website, lots of info. It doesn't tell where to lube. Do you literally lube everything? Trigger group, bolt group only? He covered disassembly, but no cleaning instructions (like little gotchas that happen on rifles (under the extractor on the ar15 can get dirty, and the spring is easy to lose).

One thing, a garand is tuned for M2 Ball ammo. Modern ammo is zippier than M2 Ball, if you are going to shoot modern hunting ammo you need an adjustable gas plug. Otherwise, the bolt is pushed back too hard and will damage the gun.

Here is the one I use:

well you didn't have to spend $300 the mossberg atr 100 in .30-06 and another $200 for a scope, but instead your old man give you a nice Garand

lol --->

Some folks have all the frickin' luck.

Congrats!

Well, by request here they are.

This is not an original stock, and there seems to be a place where there was an identification plate in the right side of the stock that is now missing. There is a 4 piece cleaning rod, bore brush, grease, and handle or tool as well in the butt.

As an aside, do you have any idea how uncomfortable it is to receive a firearm in IL when you no longer have a FOID. I live in VA now and was just home on "vacation". There isn't a lawful way to transport in IL without a FOID as far as I know and mine expired 10 years ago (after I left).

OH, and just so you appreciate how difficult it is for me to do this... I have to
1. Take picture on my phone
2. Sync it with my laptop
3. Move pictures to memory stick
4. Move MS to my internet computer
5. Post on putfile

I hope you all are happy, I am :)

The boxed match ammo that came with it is from Lake city ordnance plant. It is 173 grain, 2640 fps. It is also labled M72. Is this round to hot?

Looks like it might be a Springfield Armory Inc copy. S'ok but has no collector value.
If you're reloading, work up a load using 165 grain hunting bullets with IMR4795, IMR4064 or Varget. IMR4064 gives more consistent accuracy than IMR4795. Varget does too. A 165 grain bullet will kill any game you care to hunt.
Any factory ammo(except the Light Magnums) using bullets under 180 grain giving 2800fps will do nicely. You don't need a special gas plug either.

Sunray,
Just to clarify, you are saying that anything up to 180gr and 2800 fps or slower is safe. If I go bigger or or faster, I need to be reconsidering either the ammo or the adjustable gas plug.

Are you going to replace his garand when he wrecks it? Not saying he will, but it is not as cut and dried as that and there are a lot of opinions on this topic. The prevailing one however is to be careful and use an adjustable gas plug when using anything other than M2 Ball.

is this an actuall ww2 garand? was it his? did he have it in ww2? is it all origional? matching numbers? if the answers to these questions are yes, it could be worth a ton of money, and you may not wanna shoot it.

Rangerruck..
Why would one want a firearm to look at? Kinda defeats the purpose to me. No way on earth would I pay 1200 for a wall ornament, and no way would I accept a rifle that would be worth more as one. As to the other questions, I know the numbers dont match, the stock is a replacement, and it isn't My grandpa's ww2 rifle.
