I just picked up this S&W Model 12-2 for $420 otd from my lgs. I thought I would share two pics (sorry for the poor quality) with you folks.

I cant wait to get it to the range tomorrow. I anticipate this revolver seeing lots of belt time and my CCW.

^^^The very first air force guns had aluminum cylinders. Apparently, they didn't hold up to anything.

A search of the net will reveal a thread on one or the other of these forums where a guy shot 1000 rounds of +P through a 2" 12, checking for wear and specs along the way. Thing didn't budge.

Congrats, and welcome to the club!

Mine looks a whole lot like yours (I added the t-grip after this pic was taken, btw)

That makes sense as the guy posting was talking about them having problems with in 100 rounds if military +P ammo of the post WWII era and I was sceptical of that ammunition messing anything up.

Now I gotta have one!

Do they hold up to +P loads?
I read in a thread on cast boolits the Air force had some problems.
I have been looking at one too in 4".
It's hard to go wrong with Model 12. Although regular use of +P loads from major manufacturers will accelerate wear I do not see problem with occasional or defensive carry use. I would stay away from boutique stuff like Buffalo Bore and other companies offering spicy custom loads.

I wish they still made them!
Most gun buyers being amateurs these did not sell well despite being cataloged for long time and unlike ubiquitous alloyed J-framed stuff are more rarely seen on second-hand market. The Model 12 is pro-grade defensive handgun.

I like the way you phrase that, "pro-grade defensive handgun".
:D

I agree about the buffalo bore. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot stuff like the 135 GDHP short barrel +P from speer though; that stuff is pretty mild, overall, and I for one will almost certainly run out of money long before I can loosen up a 12 with that ammo.

I plan on loading it with my old standby, the Remington flavor of FBI load (158gr LSWCHP +P). 158GR swc's at the range and carry with the FBI load ofter I check that POI is the same for both in this pistol.

I've got Remmy's FBI loading in mine at the moment, FWIW. I'd be stunned if it wasn't spot on to POA with that load. I mean, stunned.

Let me get this straight. A model 12 is just an aluminum framed model 10?
I like it. Hard to believe they didn't sell like hotcakes.
I would buy one in a minute.
With the K frame grip length and that snub barrel, it'd be damned hard for someone to take that one away from you, before they contracted fast-acting lead poisoning.

Yup.

I have a 4" that I used to use as a field gun. Nice and light on your hip. I wish they'd made an adjustable sight version.

Do they hold up to +P loads?

Whereas it's quite possible, if not probable, that limited use of +P ammunition in a Model 12 revolver will pose no problems in terms of accelerated wear, the following admonition from Smith & Wesson was included in the warranty/manual that I got along with a Model 12 that I recently purchased:

"THIS REVOLVER WITH ITS FORGED ALUMINUM ALLOY FRAME IS DESIGNED FOR STANDARD-VELOCITY AMMUNITION. THERE ARE NOW HIGH-VELOCITY ROUNDS OF AMMUNITION IN THIS CALIBER ON THE MARKET IDENTIFIED BY A HEADSTAMP MARK "+P"; WE RECOMMEND THAT AMMUNITION SO HEADSTAMPED NOT BE USED IN THIS REVOLVER. SMITH & WESSON"
