:what:
I am a long time lurker and would like to introduce my newly customized p3AT for you guys to see.
I am a big fan of the Kel-Tec P-3AT as I know you all are. Recently Kel-Tec has redesigned the internal hammer block to eliminate the potential for short-stroking the little beast with a resulting failure to fire. I called Kel-Tec to order the upgraded block and they cheerfully dropped 3 in the mail for mine and my friend’s guns. My local gunsmith dropped the part in all of 5 minutes and voila, no more “false reset” –a tremendous improvement and a major advantage over the Ruger LCP which has the same false reset issues as the P-series Kel-Tecs. My gunsmith also designed a set of custom sights at my request because I have found that the guns shoot far more accurately than the existing vestigial sights allow. I have enclosed a few pictures of the modified gun with new sights and a fresh coat of polymer gunkote finish. The gunsmith is Philip Woodell in Columbia SC. He charges a measly $105 for the handmade sights and they are worth every penny. Minute of eye-socket at 7 yards is now a breeze with my peashooter, it inspires confidence with the little guns if you can actually hit stuff with them! Attached are a few pics. I thought the list members would be interested in this modification.

Thanks,

Anthony

Ps.. resize pics to 600x800

One of my P-3ATs has somewhat similar sights but the cost a lot more than that. Those look veerrry good and will be a huge improvement over the stock non-sights. The little Kel-Tec rides in my watchpocket nearly all the time.

nite sites

why didn't u put on nite sites while u were doing it??? The hammer block thing is no big deal. I owned 3 kt's and never short stroked it, nor have I with my lcp and it has 1350 rounds through it. It's an upgrade that kt made but certainly not a "tremendous" advantage over the lcp. Your sithy did a nice job, hope your slide holds up. I had some custom work done on my customized HC finish kt 380 slide and after about 1000 rounds the slide cracked in two places. Kt just replaced it with another slide, nothing more. I was out about $200..Their slides IMO are ot to durable for custom work. Good luck . looks nice..

The front sight is a night sight.

When you have large fingers the improved hammer block is a huge advantage over the LCP.

What's the turn around time for your gunsmith to fit these night Sights?? My wife has a Kel tec that I occasionly use as well. I've been wanting to fit some decent sights on it for a while now.

My only concern is like the last fellow whose slide cracked.... I had some glow paint dots on my last slide and when I sent it in to Kel tec for maintenance, they replaced the slide as well and sent me a stock slide again.:(

Does anybody else have any experiences with modifying their Kel tec slides and then having it break, thus losing their investment???

(By the way, this is a great thread!!! I really love my wife's Kel tec!:))

It was less 30 days turnaround

Not sure about the warranty. I don't see how these cust can weaken the slide anywhere..

I don't see any dots showing on the rear sight but assume camera angle or something. Good big sights I can pick up quicklywith big white dots would be just perfect. Think I'll contact that gunsmith of yours. The hammer block upgrade seems a good idea.
Thanks for sharing this with us.:)

I don't use any dots or anything on the rear sight on any of my guns. All you need is a nice, big and bright front sight to make hits on this little gun. Innovative can do whatever you like, this was my preference.

Had my first "instinctive shooting" session with an instructor last week at the local range. In a just a few minutes, he had me hitting double and triple taps at 7 yards without using sights -- just draw/fire with eyes on the target. I was doing this with both M&Pc 9mm and 642. So I've got to wonder, why put sights on a pistol such as a P3AT?

By your logic, then would you argue that even a 1911 officer's or commander's model that aren't used as target match pistols, ought not to have sights? As far as barrel length goes, they're not all that much different. I agree that "instinctive shooting" is nice, but if that's the end all and be all of shooting, then I guess sights on a combat pistol are a thing of the past?

1/2 what I paid for my P3AT for sights. I don't think so. Iam in the crowd that Close up won't need or have time for them . I shoot my KT pretty regular at 10 yds and can keep on a 9" paper plate at a quick fire. Good enough for my pocket pistol.

Officer is 3 1/2 " barrel and Commander 4 1/4"Both in different class than KT My 3" Agent has the trench sight I don't use that sight much either..

I am happy. Thats all that really matters to me!

I have some long term, handgun shooting credentials. I am not new to this. I have been instructed by some of the best, multiple times: Hackathorn, Farnam, Todd Jarrett, Ernie Langdon, Dave Harrington, Instructors for the Rogers school, Jim Cirillo, Suarez, Stanford, yadda yadda yadda ad nauseum. I have made an educated decision.

I am a shooting instructor also but rarely do it anymore even though I have all the credentials to do that also.

I want sights on all my guns regardless of the cost.

If you don't want sights or want to hit your target, thats fine.

I like to hit what I am aiming at and I usually do so with the aid of sights.

I have found most pointshooters who lack sights on their handguns usually can't shoot nearly as well as they think they can.

When you are relying on a pipsqueak pistol to save your bacon, every advantage helps.

PS-I practice point shooting too! I just don't rely on it for anything other than bad breath range.

PS-Shooting isn't instinctive, Sh*tting is.
