Came home from a long day visiting family and was pleasently surprised to find this:
ccw.jpg

Waiting for me in the mailbox. :D

No restrictions either, I am happy to live in a 2A-friendly county. The definition of "may-issue" varies *wildly* in NYS depending on your county.

Strange coincidences:
- The "long day visiting family" today consisted of some belated Christmas gift exchanging. I got a handgun safe.
- I was wearing the same shirt from the photo when I opened the letter.
- The large brown envelope underneath the letter is the Florida CCW application that I ordered from the state of Florida website on Sunday, it came in the mail today too.

The judge can write on your permit things like "For target shooting only". Then if a LEO catches you carrying and you are not on your way too/from a range, he may inform the judge and the judge will revoke the permit. The restrictions hold no legal weight, but since the issuing judge has the power to revoke your permit at any time on a whim, some judges have taken it upon themselves to restrict permits as they see fit under threat of revocation. It is conceivable that a judge could write "only good on Sundays" or some other such nonsense on your permit. I am lucky to live in a county where the judge does not feel the need to do something like this.

NYC is basically a separate state.

CNYCacher,
I'm happy for you, enjoy and be safe..

NYC does not recognize any other gun permits, not even NY State's permits!!!

Also, CNYCacher, you really should remove your address from the post. It's not smart to post your address and let everyone who comes here there is a gun at that address. It's just not a good idea.

Glad you are in a good county, I was when I lived in NY. How long did it take? Mine was some sort of record at around 37 days...

Yup, I voted for that Judge that year.

Sorry, I used the same pic that I sent to my friends and family.
I thought about it before posting it, but it didn't look like you could possibly read it, the picture is such low quality. I blacked it out just to be safe.

CNYCacher,
I was just worried about your private info. I wasn't worried about the people who post here but the "not so friendly" lurkers who come here and who are not our friends might be a problem. You never know what an anti will do these days... Better to be safe...

I do understand how excited you are for sure. I know how hard it is to get those papers in NY, I lived in NYC for the first 49 years of my life. :barf: I like living in PA much better especially because of the fair gun laws.

I'm very happy for you!!! :D

whats crazy is that a STATE permit isn't valid in a CITY in that state. i guess NYC has its own set of rules. it's the only city i know of that collects a city income tax. :(

when i go to NYC for my cousin's wedding im going to carry just because i can. dammit. i hope she has some anti-2A types at her wedding too haha. i bet she will. she seems anti-2A. :D

Actually, it was about 8 months

I applied May 10th, was told by the guy doing fingerprints that it will take 6 months and I should just be patient. November 10th rolled around and I gave the PD a call. The response I got back was "looks like it's been delayed because we are still waiting on one of your references".

Let me explain references. Where I live, you need to list names and addresses for 4 people who will be your references. Requirements are:
Not related to you.
Not related to each other.
Don't live with you.
Don't live with each other.
Do live in this county (Cayuga).
The four people actually sign your application before you turn it in, then the PD mails forms to them to fill out and they mail it back. Three of my references mailed it back, one of them dropped it off at the PD. The one which was dropped off is the one that was missing.
The officer who handles these things said that everything was ready to go to the judge for approval on July 7th, but they were missing the reference form. :fire: Why it took a phone call on my part 4 months later to make anything happen with this, I'll never know. So another form was mailed out, it was misaddressed so it came back, the PD balked asking if the guy really exists, we got the right address, they mailed a new one, got it back, waited a week or so, then forwarded it on to the judge. Holidays were about, so I am sure that caused more delays. . . Anyway, it added up to 8 months, which is about 6 months longer than it would have taken if the guy had called me when the background check came back but he was missing a reference sheet, OR if I had been more vigilant and had called him every week or something, which I doubt he would have appreciated.

Either way, I got it now.

Wow. When I was up there I lived in Monroe County which was very pro carry. I think they realized how dangerous Rochester is...amazing.

Of the 4 references, none could live with you, but 2 could be related. They had to reside in the county, Monroe. For my references, 2 were unrestricted permit holders and the other two were close friends (one was also my boss). They ended up only phone interviewing 3 of the 4. I remember them signing the application, but I don't think they had to fill anything else out...I should check, I know I copied everything before I mailed it out in my "cover your assets" file.

Just one county over, Genesee, my friends (he and his wife) applied 2 months before I did and didn't get their permits, with TARGET/HUNTING until 2 months after I got mine.

It is all about the county.

So what handgun have you or do you plan to put onto your permit (and you might as well just take a day off of work to buy a handgun since you need to pay for it, go downtown, wait in line, pay a fee $5 if I remember right, get your slip, drive back to the store and finally take possession of what you bought and paid for earlier).

way to many hoops

and one of the places you'll really need a gun , NYC, you can't even carry.

NY a beautiful State run by disgusting nazi's.

Congrats anyway, but personally I am never sorry I left.

I'm in Otsego county. After my references finally turned in their papers, I recieved my unrestricted permit in 11 days.

Spreadfire Arms,
Listen to me VERY carefully!!! If you get caught in NYC with a handgun you are in deep *****. NYC has a mandatory ONE YEAR in prison for getting caught with a gun and no permit. You have no idea how bad it really is there, I know because I lived there for 49 years. DO NOT CARRY IN NYC if you know what's good for you!!!

for clarification i would only carry in NYC in a 100% lawful manner.

you may want to publish your quote here on this THR thread:

it took me 6 months in onadaga county, but it would have been shorter if one of the references had bothered to fill out the paperwork, so I had to find a 5th reference, but all in all, no big deal. can't wait to get back in the states and pick up another pistol. I think I'm about due for one.

One nice thing about NY State permits are that they never expire. I still have mine that was issued in 1987. Not that it will do me any good, I don't think I will be moving back there anytime soon, and very few other states seems to recognize a NYS permit.

The "Never Expire" thing varies by county. My county does not expire, and in that respect it is similar to almost all other NYS counties. Some of the counties downstate actually do expire their licenses. I just verified this with the county clerk on the phone 30 sec. ago.

One other nice thing about NYS is that CCW is totally NOT on the public's radar. This is nice because you never see signs prohibiting CCW anywhere, and the only places you can't carry are schools and courthouses.

If you are in the right county, NYS is just as good as any other shall-issue state, except for the license is required just to possess part, and the registering part. But the possession license comes with CCW, so that's good. How many other places have shall-issues lifetime CCW?

Of course, having to register each firearm is a pain, and that is apparent to those in Ulster county. . . :(

Either way, I am happy for now.

When I lived in Syracuse, in Onondaga County, it took me 6 weeks to get my RESTRICTED permit. It was "For Premise/Hunting/Target Only" Then when I got my armored car job I had "For Employment" added on. The whole damn system is a bunch of BS.

That's what I love about Virginia. $50, shall issue CCW, and the state legislature just passed a new law making them lifetime last year :) Plus I don't have to register my handguns with the government either so they can decide to take them one day.

Have fun with good old Elliot Spitzer. I don't think he ever saw a gun law he didn't like!

That's not entirely correct. I believe any Federal propety is also off limits. I know for sure that the Post Office is (though there is an internet rumor that says there is a "loop hole" in the statues that allows is, but it hasn't been proven to my knowledge) and the Federal Library in Rochester is too. Also, Monroe and Wayne County Offices also prohibit it, so I would assume all the counties government offices are that way too.

Also not true. A Judge can restrict it in several ways and they do carry legal weight. If your permit is restricted to target shooting, and you get pulled over, not only had you better be on your way to/from a range (which might be hard for the LEO to disprove) but the gun better be in a locked case outside of the drivers area of control. Otherwise you could be charged with CCW without a permit. Also, a judge can not revoke your permit "on a whim". NYS is tough, but there has to be justifiable cause.

I think it's interesting that your county's licenses are still on paper. Here in Ulster County we have a set of two plastic laminated cards. One is the picture license itself, and the other is a list of registered handguns, both of which must be carried together.

So now that you've got it, what do you plan on buying ?
