I missed this thread previously - I am glad to hear you're doing well.

I have a friend who had the same thing happen about 10 years ago and also broke his back - he was lucky enough to make a full recovery as well, and is back up in the trees with his bow.

I know I said the last updated was the LAST update, but.....

..............I contacted the hunter's education coordinator for this area the other day. I've volunteered to start speaking at hunter's education classes on the dangers associated with treestands. The local instructors all have my contact info now and I'll probably start speaking in March/April. I've also signed up for instructor certification this summer and will then be a volunteer instructor.

Hopefully I can use this story to prevent others from doing something like I did..........or worse.

Glad to hear you are doing well. I have learned about tree stand safety from a situation that didn't involve me, but still happened. Unlike you, this guy had walked about a half mile to his tree stand. Being in the Ozarks, it is a pretty tough walk. Once he got into the stand, he ended up having a heart attack and fell from the stand. Fortunately, he had friends with him that had called and filed a missing person report. They knew the general area he was at, but not the specifics. After about a 2 hour search, we finally came across him. He wasn't doing so well, but fortunately, he survived. This just proves that even if your physical condition is good, you can still fall out of a stand. Always use your harness.

Thank the Good Lord that you made it. Personally I've tried tree stands, but I never felt "comfortable" getting in and out of one. I've had too many friends that had tree stand accidents. My uncle fell out of his and broke his back too.

That's an incredible story, btw .... very well written too. Praying for the best for you and your continued recovery.
