Well you guys are going to laugh because I just posted earlier today and shared some photos of my new (to me) Wingmaster. Had it for 2-3 weeks now and it's great.

Well this evening I was wandering around Cabelas and came across this little beaut and thought I could give it a good home. :)

20 ga 870 LW Special (also referred to as Special Field as I understand right)

Got it for 3 bills...I think that's a decent price...it's in really nice condition...no obvious wear marks that I can see. What do you think?

It think you got a great deal on nice little 870 and I also "wish" that I would have seen it before you! ;)

Congrads on a nice find.

My wife has the 20 ga 1100 version of that and she loves it. If your's has the screw in choke tubes look into getting an extended version and your patterns will improve.....

Very nice. I've never seen a 20 ga. Special Field so far, and only about three 12 ga. ones. They didn't get produced very long- congrats on snagging a nice specimen.

lpl

Thanks guys...I thought it was a pretty good deal, but then it was a bit of a spontaneous purchase.

I came home with it and did a google search and saw a few auctions where a similar one sold for $420, and a couple expired auctions with no bidders that started around $550-600.

Yes, it has the screw-in Rem Chokes.

The barrel seems to be 23.5" based on my measurement. My 12 ga is advertised as a 28" barrel and that's exactly the measurement I got. Measuring from the same reference point to the muzzle it measures 23.5"

Seems more likely it was advertised as 24"? Any thoughts?

If you can stand a shock, when I bought hers at Wal Mart in Denver (probably late 80's) it was on sale for 299.99........ I have seen them as high as 650 to 700 in the past......

Well I went out and broke some clays with it this morning and had a blast. It feels nice in the hands...light and easy to handle.

Sure doesn't look that much shorter.....but it is nice - like the English grip

Ya did good.

The Special Field is achieving cult status.

The barrel was advertised as a 23" LW VR.

The stock's drop was subtly different from the standard model, and for many folks works very well for shortnfast work.

The 20 gauge 870 here, not a SF, has a straight grip stock with standard drop and 21" barrel with Remchokes. It works for me.

Enjoy.

Dave, thanks for the info on the advertised barrel length, etc.

Talking about the English style stock, that was one reservation I had when I looked at it in the store. After holding it and shouldering it, it actually felt pretty nice in my hands.

After shooting it last weekend I thought it really handled nice (just my impression...I'm no expert).

I think it will do nicely on some quail when the season opens in October. :)

You're very welcome.

The theory on the straight grip, at least in conjunction with a splinter forend on a SxS was it put the hands closer in line to the bore.

To me, it's more like a natural pointing of the hand. Since I do well with curved grips, it may be a minor factor important only to those who really get into minutae.

Yes, and it also makes long-term carrying in the field much more comfortable.

I saw a 12 like that. Almost bought it, but didn't because I'd want it in 20. Never seen a 20. Nice gun.

Excellent find!!! My dad's hunting bud had one, and it was his go to gun for grouse. It's definitely on my list to find.

Great find!

Word of suggestion though: the Special Field 870's had different barrels than the standard 870's. Just keep that in mind if you ever decide to buy a second barrel (slug, etc) for it.

Thanks for the nice words and the advice! I've now put probably 150 rounds through it and I really like it. I'll be using it this weekend in attempt to get some quail.
