Well this is my very first C & R rifle that I just got in the mail not 2 hours ago. I felt like it was Christmas!!! :D

It has some scratches on the stock but I plan on refinishing it anyway.

Does the hand guard always come in the different color? The ones I've seen on the net has the same thing too...

Here are a couple of photos. They are not very good cause I'm not that good with my camera yet. LOL...

The Rifle...

The Mark...

Tell me what you think.

I got it for 89 dollars. :)

According to this page you have a relatively rare M38. It is not uncommon for the handguard to be mismatched. Do the serial numbers on the other parts match? If so, you got a pretty good deal. If the bore isn't a sewer pipe, I'd say a very sweet deal.

jmm

Yep all the Numbers match That I could find.

I tried to take a photo of the bore but it didn't come out very well. But I looked at it and the rifling is pretty crisp all the way through.

Congrats on your purchase. Hide your credit cards, because those milsurps are addicting.

Yep, getting your C&R is like finding the keys to the "crack" closet for a junkie.
One (hundred) is never enough!
Time to start working on saying, "But Hon, you wouldn't believe how cheap it was!"

Seeing it is a 1945 M38...........

refinishing the stock would greatly decrease it's value. Your photo is too dark to tell if it is a M38 stock or a M44. Is the muzzle counterbored?...chris3

Well here is another photo of the rifle.

another photo.

Is the muzzle Counterbored? huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh,,, I don't think so. It's shiney on the end.

I'm just getting my feet wet into C & R. LOL...

Congrads on your first C&R purchase. Agood choice for your first also, rugged, reliable, and cheap to shoot. I just picked up an M44 a couple of weeks ago. It does'nt take long after one's first C&R purchase to realize that EVERYDAY COULD BE Christmas! :D :D :D

Nice choice! Leave it like it is. Clean the cosmoline out of it and keep her oiled.

Look closely at the muzzle, get a light and look down the bore from that end and see if someone removed the rifling back about a 1/2 inch - inch. Most M-38 Mosin Nagants I've seen are indeed counter bored. It would have been done to a carbine with an otherwise decent bore during a refurbish. Crowns are often damaged from the steel cleaning rods on these old warhorses and counter-boring is how they got more mileage out of them.

I will save you the trouble. That line never works. Buy a bouquet flowers with each rifle instead. You will become good friends with your local florist and FFL.
