My mother in law is very very unhealthy currently and is in the U of U Hospital in SLC, Ut. Those of you who know me or of me........know Im a holster maker. Its just second nature that my wife also carries (and wants belts, holsters, purse repairs..etc.) and is pretty deadly with her little CCW...proud? Sure, I am. :D
Anyway....here's what happens.

She's doing an all nighter with her mom and in the process she's helping her mom in bed..rolling her over and etc. Anyway, in the we hours of the morning...3-4 am, a nurse sees her holster/gun..I dont know whether she just printed or flashed the weapon. My wife being very tired is unaware of this happening.
A while later a Doctor taps my wife on the shoulder and ask's her to come into the hall. There are 4 uniformed officers waiting for her. They pull her into a room across the hall and tell her she's been made and try and tell her that she cant carry in a Hospital. She is shocked/humored by the whole thing...she's a great sport. So she tells the officers she "Can carry in a hospital, she's a holster makers wife and knows the UT CCW laws very well! But admittedly, she did get made and will do what they recommend"
They tell her that they prefer she take her weapon and put it in her car. They also want her carrying the ammo in her purse...just in case.

Reluctantly, she agrees...all 4 escort her out of the hospital and 2 all of the way to her car. She puts it away and on the way back into the hospital the only remaining officer tells her 'He's sorry for the inconvenience and he respects her right to carry and wishes more people would!" He knows she really did nothing wrong. She laughs and talks to him. He lives in our town and she gives him one of my cards. Ok..........cool!
She's one of my biggest supports.....yes, Im still proud.

It turns out, during the past evening, her family had been up in arms with the Dr's at this facility because of the lack of care her mom had been getting. My wife is very small, guiet in nature and just mellow. Do to lack of sleep and being pissed at the staff, she had been yelling at Dr's previous to getting made. Now this is starting to come together....................hmmm.

Now for the best part.......:D The next morning..I was there and every Dr. that came in had a Security Guard with them.......Terrified of my cute little gun toting wife.......Ba ha ha.
Sorry, but you'ld have to know her to really appreciate this.

I called and talked with a very congenial Lt. at the U of U Police and he agreed that what happened was just a bunch of Medical Dimwits being paranoid and over reacting. But concealed is concealed! She admits she got made and will take her lumps. In talking with him, I find out this Lt. is a friend of their family for 20 years. So I told him who the "alleged threatening person" was....he almost fell out of his chair laughing. They were scared of her?????????

Oh well........life goes on!

Oh BTW, by some ironic accident, the next morning when I was up there.....I had 3 guns on me. Damn, how did that happen?

Take it easy and shoot well....................Eric

Happens to best of us Eric!!! I guess from your description of events .... the medics were ''smarting'' from having been given some (deserved) lashing from your dear wife's tongue!! Sorta - ''get yer own back time''.

It is sad how much paranoia (panic?) is induced by sight of a gun - even mention of the darned word all too often. Do folks forget that responsible law abiding people are - wait for it - yeah - the vast majority?!!

Here's how it has begun to affect even my thinking - yesterday - local Ford, Lincoln, Mercury dealership, is having a bit of a sale. Radio ad' for this - ''Bring in anything to trade against your new truck - old ATV, lawn mower, fishing rod, GUN''!!! OMG ... they said ''GUN'' on the radio ... oh shock, horror.

Well no - no biggie to me obviously but ya know - with zero tolerance stuff and all - I hate to say it but I am all but expecting this PC nonsense to spread, to even here. The ''mustn't say'' syndrome.

Actually I was more than pleased at hearing the ad' .... more the better. Let's have that word ''GUN'' well and truly back in circulation.

Glad you went into the hospital ''loaded'' ... and of course, concealed is concealed, n'est pas! :D

Hope MIL gets better soon.

You see, Sarge, it wouldn't matter if the guard was armed or not because he wasn't there to protect the doctor, he was there to make him feeeeeeel better.

So it's irrelevant if he could have actually done anything, as long as he soothed the poor widdle doc's fears.

Wow.

When she went home that night did she demand an escort to her car ?And every time she has been there since , has she demanded an escort ?? It is of course the parking lots that are the most dangerous !!.

It turns out, during the past evening, her family had been up in arms with the Dr's at this facility because of the lack of care her mom had been getting.
This seems to be endemic with the entire 'health care' profession, and it's a sad commentary. Everyone needs an advocate when they are under medical care. You simply can't trust healthcare providers to be diligent; question everything.

Sarg.....4 DR's came in serperately through the AM with a Huge Guy named Shelby....he knew my wife from being around the hospital. He told her he thought it was an absolute waste of time..but had to do it. He's not armed....just HUGE!

Stand.. He was just doing his job.....right or wrong. At least he turned out to be cool. I know alot of LEO's who admit, they cant protect everyone...its up to us to to protect ourselves. Just do show your gun in THIS hospital.

She carries a HUGE INTIMDATING Makarov, OWB Hi Ride Pancake @ 4.00...

And she got an escort to her car........me.

12Volt knows my wife fairly well, we all shoot togethor. He talked to an attorney and says if we want to raise hell with the Hospital, we have every reason. We'll have to see.

You gotta love it...........Shoot well.

Most of the hospitals here in Columbus, are CPZs: Criminal Protection Zones as they are posted "No Guns". It's one of the more stupid facets of our new CHL law. :(

Take care, Eric.

I find that shocking for Utah. Heck, even in NY the only places off limits to carry are schools. Everything else is legal (unless there is a local law...no pre-emption here).

PCRCCW: quiet, mellow, and a redhead? I'll give you any pair but never all three. If she can handle you, she can't be too mellow. :)

Glad it turned out ok, sorry your mother-in-law is doing poorly.

Eric ~

Tell your wife I said she handled the situation better, and far more calmly, than most would have done.

The whole story makes me angry. The more I think about it, the angrier I get. If she was not violating any laws in being armed at the hospital, the hostpital had no right to demand she disarm while there -- period, full stop.

Tempting to say I'd have demanded an armed escort to and from the car that evening, and every time I visited thereafter. Yes, silly, and childish, and a pain in the patootey, but turnabout's fair play! (I'm probably just venting here, but sheesh....)

As for fighting with docs & hospital because the care wasn't up to par -- I think most of us who've had loved ones in the hospital have had to go to bat for them. Don't feel bad about it, just do what's gotta be done.

Hoping your MIL has a speedy recovery.

Simply being armed would not have been a problem had she not had the audacity to question her mother's care the previous day. THAT was the problem. :barf:

My wife works at a hospital so I am there a couple times a week. For having so many highly educated people it never ceases to amaze me how stupid they can be!!

My wife works in a hospital here in WI, but the main office is in MN. The head office sent the hospital here in WI some "Bans guns on the premises signs" which don't have any bearing on a hospital in WI where CCW is not allowed!!! :banghead: Plus I am never very impressed with the Doctors I meet. They tend to be kind of full of themselves.

I hope your wife continues to be a pain in the backside.

How quickly we forget.
It was only a few years ago that another hospital in the Salt Lake valley had an incident in which someone with a gun might have been able to save a life. It was a disgruntled husband, IIRC, who came to the hospital where his wife worked and shot up some folks. Had a big hostage scene and much media coverage due to the fatalities.
So... here we have another hospital doing what they can to preserve the criminal safety zone.
Takes a while for some people to learn.
