I just couldn't help it. I saw the "My wife hates guns thread" and couldn't help but report success.

When I meet my wife she had only shot a gun a few times squirrel hunting, she said she stopped when she killed one and started crying. If I remember correctly she told me she had never shot a pistol. So needless to say her experience was 'limited'

She never had a big problem with my gun hobby but she was almost completely unwilling to participate. I just let her watch from a distance for a few years, over time she got more and more comfortable being around guns in general. When our sons, now 6 &10, started taking up the sport she showed a little more interest. That was what I had been waiting so long for she started showing a little interest own her own. Sure I gave her some encouragement along the way but I tried hard to never push her into doing anything she didn't really want to do.

I tried to find a gun that she would like but every one I found she hated because it had to much recoil. She would close her eyes turn her head to the left and almost faint when it shot, it scared her that bad. So obliviously I needed to go buy a .22 pistol, now I didn't just go buy one and bring it home. She went with me and picked it out, I never would have picked out what she did and I still say the only reason she picked it was because it had a laser.

Anyway, she was even a little scared of the .22 for a while but within a couple hundred rounds she was willing to keep her eyes open and within a few hundred she would even shoot it single-action, that was a BIG step for her. She shot well over a thousand rounds through that little .22 before really getting comfortable with shooting in general. Not long after that she decided she wanted to "carry" Even though she loved the .22 she understood it was a little small for a carry weapon. So I began to borrow every gun I could from friends and such to let shoot them and see how well she liked them. After some time we got her a Sub-Compact XD .40 S&W

In Summary:
I went form having a wife that "tolerated" my guns to having a wife that carries a .40S&W (that out recoils my 1911) and it happened in only 7 years. I'd love her even if she still 'tolerated' them, but I am very proud of her for wanting to enjoy the sport with me and understanding the responsability to protect herself and our children.

DeepSouth,

Our experience is similar. Growing interest on both our parts ultimately leading to concealed carry. I can add we've both taken courses and my wife has her own AR and AK and 3 pistols.

My fiance' (hate that word) didn't care much for guns when we met. After cleaning out the non-experienced brainwash she was indoctrinated with she has made her own gun purchase. She doesn't mind at all my gun budget either.
I clean my guns out in the open. :D

My Girl has had her own Remington 12g pump-gun when I met her so shooting is just something we do together.

My wife hasn't graduated the AR/AK class....YET. but never say never right:D

And she is now beginning to understand the gun budget slowly but surely, because when she wants something she wants it BAD.

The thing is she loves lasers which are not a cheap addition to a gun, if it wasn't for lasers I sometimes wonder if she'd even have one.
For me new pistol = new holster for her new pistol = new laser.

We are still working on the rifles, she doesn't seem to show as much interest in them.... maybe because they don't have lasers.....But with time...........

My wife was the same way, she just tolerated it for quite a while. I can see her interest growing though. She will occasionaly come to the range with me and just the other day she asked for my help because she was having a gun control argument with one of her friends. (Which she won by the way, her friend is coming to the range with us next time!:D) We are both passively looking for a gun for her, hopefully she will find one she wants soon. She has even been saving up her discretionary spending money (we just call mine my shooting budget) to buy one but little does she know so have I and I can't wait to buy her one. I'm more than a little excited.

My wife has been hunting since she was 8 years old. She's a better shot and has killed more deer, dove, and ducks than most men. That said, we grew up together, lived next door to each other in school. Her only complaint is how much I spend on guns and ammo and the frequency of my purchases. Owning them or their presence has never been, nor will ever be, an issue. Neither of us would have it any other way.....

My friend had a gun pointed at her head about 15 years ago by her ex during an argument. So when I started getting into guns, she was less than enthused.

Fast forward 7 years, she recently applied for her CC permit and has 'confiscated' my P11, with eyes on my new Kahr.:scrutiny:

I went to the gun show last weekend and picked up some x39 and 22. When I got back she asked, "why didn't you get some 9mm?".

I said, "because they wanted $25 a box for it?"

Similar to Deep South’s wife- I never gave much thought to shooting or owning guns. But after working overseas I decided to learn more about the guns we have in case I needed to use them. I guess liking guns and shooting is an understatement- as I have found a new sport and hobby that I LOVE! Here is how I got started. My husband took me out on Sunday’s when the range wasn’t crowded, knowing I was nervous about having others around while I learned. He walked me through the basics. We had one base rule, if I don’t like the way the gun fires, then put it down and try another.

Being in an environment that was encouraging and supportive helped me gain the confidence and the LOVE to come out to the range again. The group that we shoot with for Cowboy action helped me out the most. I saw a different perspective on guns by just being out there with them. The men love all aspects of shooting and will explain not only the gun but the difference in the guns. So I was able to identify what I didn’t like about the gun (ie: grip, sights or kick) and why I didn’t like it. My first modern gun was my Ruger SR-9 for my CHL. I had the confidence when I went into the gun store to explain the grip styles and sights I was looking for!! For me, learning the history of the guns, the type of loads, and exposure to both old and modern guns I fell in love with the sport and culture.

So, I have gotten us into Single Action, Appleseed, and reloading. He rolls his eyes when I try new guns, because he knows that when I say “I love that gun” it will end up on my Birthday and Christmas list!
Since Jan. I have added 5 guns to our collection and hopefully more by December.

My wife was the same way- wasnt opposed to guns since her dad and brother had them. She talks about how she used to love running around the woods with their BB gun when she was growing up. She would shoot skeet with us and got prety good since she only had one shot (couldnt reach to cycle my 20ga pump). A few years later car jackings were going up in the area and she wanted a pistol to keep in her car. I wanted to go buy her one but she insisted that she could shoot my P97. So i took her to the range, she had never shot a pistol before (other than my old 22LR SA revolver), she couldnt take the recoil from the .45ACP. She decided to get a XD-9 SubCompact of her own. She can now handle the recoil from a .45, and tries to take my XD-40 V-10 at any chance she gets. When i bought my new AR15 she insisted that she get to put the first magazine through it, which i allowed since she bought it for me as a christmas present. She picked out a Benelli Nova 20ga for her christmas last year and she can now reach to cycle the gun.

Mine has never been an anti, but was never really "pro gun" either. Fast forward to our first child..........We had to stop on the road to feed/diaper our (at the time) 3-4 month old. While sitting there we watched a drug deal go down (not a bad part of town in a small/"safe" city). Once on the road again, I asked her what she would have done if I wasn't there. We were gun shopping in a week and she had her permit in a couple of months.

She shoots enough to be proficient, but doesn't really enjoy it. It is 100% a tool to her. That is fine with me.

MrsBFD loves shooting, will tolerate cleaning/maintenance on firearms, and has zero interest in researching the next toy. That means I have a partner to go to the range with, a helper for cleaning/modification/maintenance, and no argument when I decide what toy I want to add to the collection.

I think I'm pretty damn lucky, myself.
