Proud of My Wife

Congrats on your wife beginning to shoot & carry. I am a bit mystified though about her recoil sensitivity...Maybe it's because I'm a lifelong gunchick, but even though I consider myself somewhat recoil sensitive, I have seldom found handgunning to be painful. I understand the snubbie not being a good beginner weapon. I have one, and I don't really like to shoot it with .357mag in it, but it is fine w/38spl or 38+P. It is, however a full stainless one--not a lightweight. The probable DAO trigger is what likely had her missing the target, and the flinch from the shot too. As for my preferred wheelgun, it is a 4" Ruger GP-100. I can shoot the Ruger all day with .357mag 125gr JHP over 7.7gr Bullseye. It is a soft shooting .357. Perhaps she would enjoy a larger wheelgun?

For an auto in 9mm, you might look at the Browning HI Power. Recently got a chance to shoot one, and MY GOODNESS! It was sweet! Trigger is a bit different than my preferred 1911, but it balanced perfectly, and is the softest shooting 9mm I've ever handled. I used to own a P220 & P226, both in 9mm for comparison.

Again, tell your wife she is doing the right thing! Oh, and when you go get that new XD, buy the NEW one for her, as a gift! Us women like getting expensive gifts from our husbands! :D

There have been some REALLY good threads on THR regarding guns for people with hand strength or sensitivity problems. Some fairly recently. You might check some of those out and have her shoot some of the recommended guns if possible.

Sometimes little things make a big difference--e.g. my wife HATES shooting my Glock 17 because it hurts her hand but loves shooting an H&K USP 9mm. I can't even tell the difference between the two...

Congradulations!! I have the same exact scenario in my household... Solved the problem by buying her a Glock19 for Xmas... The recoil does not seem to bother her as bad as the Bersa .380 did... Probably a better grip angle for her.

Proud of my wife, too.

My wife is new to pistol shooting, too. After years of quiet anti-ism, then reluctantly letting me indulge my hobby, she finally agreed to get her own 9mm (after finding my .40s and .45s a bit too heavy recoil on a range trip together). Bought her a G19, which she shot once, back in September, and didn't have a great deal of success. I finally got her back on the range on Valentine's Day.

First magazine was wild, all over the place, mostly to the left. Hmm. Took her through sight picture again, stance, etc. Second mag was still wild and left. Finally figured out she was shooting with both eyes open, and she was sighting with both eyes. Had her close the left eye (after doing an eye dominance test).

She immediately put 27 of her next 30 shots in the -0 zone of a standard IDPA target. At one point, she had a 3-shot string I could have covered with a half dollar. Pretty dang good shooting for someone who's only shot a pistol 3 times in her life. :) She left the range absolutely beaming, determined to shoot at least once a month.

I have a similar experience. After my wife and I were married, I quickly took her to the gun store to pick out a firearm. She picked out a Kel Tec P3AT because she said it was "cute". When we went out shooting she quickly discovered it wasn't so cute shooting a .380 with such a small gun to absorb recoil. She became discouraged and it was very tough to get her to go shooting with me anymore. She didn't like any of my other platforms like my 1911's or shotguns. Finally, one day my older brother comes to town with his XD and let her shoot it. She loved it! She told me to go buy her an XD subcompact in 9mm. She got a pistol that wasn't as "cute" but she does enjoy shooting it. I'm happy too because she actually shoots it now AND she even upgraded to a more potent caliber and doesn't complain about recoil at all!
