Hey all -- I've got a replica 1858 Remington that I'm trying to identify. It was purchased as a crude kit back in about 1981. It has what appears to be a serial number on the bottom of the grip strap: 071577 and the following marks on the cylinder: "PN" and a shield-looking mark with crossed rifles in it and a star with a circle around it above the shield.

Anyone have any ideas who the manufacturer of this kit was?

Thanks!

Jason

A company named Palmetto made a lot of Remington kit revolvers back around that time. The kit guns often didn't have barrel markings. I have a long barreled brass frame Remmie Repro kit from them. IIRC I purchased it about 1983.

Thanks for all the replys, guys.

And Zimmer, the kit had tool marks all over the barrel which had to be filed and sanded smooth, so any markings that were there when I bought the kit were subsequently removed by me. The only part of the gun that was smooth when I received it was the cylinder. The frame and brass parts were as-cast, requiring lots of filing/sanding.

Thats kind of weird, I thought the PN was for Nitro Proof. Is there any thing on the barrel flat under the loading lever?

My 1858 Lyman Kit has the exact same marks on the cylinder. It has a serial number on the grip frame and the number 476 under the loading lever. But no other markings.

You've got me wondering if there just might be some numbers remaining on the barrel beneath the loading lever. I'll check tonight and report back.

What would the numbers mean? Presumably the serial number is the one stamped into the grip frame, so what would another set of numbers represent, possibly the model, or other?

Sometimes other numbers are the assembly numbers of parts that have been fitted, possibly before the final finishing process has been completed.
They may be stamped on the gun before the serial number is assigned.

Hey there 72coupe and Ruger!

Indeed there is a number under the loading lever! What's more there's some sort of logo or symbol, but I can't quite make it out. Here's the picture:

The symbol sorta looks like two interlinked circles within a circle and there's an odd shape, similar to the state of Nevada, in the mix.

Any ideas?

Looks like Armi San Paolo and Euroarms. They share a DGG logo and yours looks like the mark on my Euroarms Colt 1860. ;)

Prior to December, 2001, the company was known as Armi San Paolo. This company was formed in 1970 and used the initials of its three founders, Grassi, Doninelli and Gazzola to make up an emblem. These letters will sometimes be found in a circle.

And with the Nevada symbol I thought it came off the Ponderosa!!! Just goes to show ya I can be wrong once in a blue moon!!! :;chuckling::
