Mystery ammo

A friend has a mystery. He has an unopened tin of rifle ammo that for some reason he can't/won't open. Here's a couple of px of the markings on the outside of the can;

What's your best guess as to what's inside there. Some guess are, 7.62 X 39 and 7.62 X 54. I hope it's X 54, I'll buy it, then have a bunch of ammo for my Mosin.

looks to be either x54r or x39. Either way it's chinese or some other asian origin. Could also be 7.62x25 but likely it's rifle ammo. What are the measurements of the can?

Good point, it COULD be 7.62 X 25, but that could also be for the roosky automatic rifle as well as for a CZ-52 pistol.

Guessing about 12-14 inches long X 6" X6"

Small tin, 550 rounds. It's 7.62x39, if I had to guess - especially since it's Chinese. Old Norinco ammo. If you're REALLY lucky, it's steel core!

Looks like Chinese 7.62x39 steel core in SKS stripper clips to me.

550 round cans are almost sure to be that.

Yes, that is Chinese.
The SKS is called the Model 1956 Carbine in China, thus the 56 on the ammo tin.

Type 56 is for the Chinese AK, and the round is also Type 56. So......pretty sure you have x39 there.

Thanks for the info guys. Apparently it was one of those "if you open it, you bought it." Not knowing what's in it, he didn't want to open it. He has several SKS rifles, so I suppose he'll buy it. But maybe the less I know about it, the better off I am.

LOL....LOL....LOL....My 1st thought was that it was a export intended can of the infamous product from Austin, Minnesota. Gawd, I can remember those austere days of tomatoe soup and fried Spam. I think right now I'd rather eat the bullets.
