Mystery telescopic sight

Well, hopefully I'll do as well this time as I did with the $70 Lyman 438 this October.

I found this at my local gunshop, and for $20 decided to take a chance. Looks .22ish, and very good optics. Side mounts on the RIGHT side of a rifle, making me think for a single-shot breechloader of some sort.









Any ideas what it is? My dealer is a good guy, and he's been in business for a loooong time, and he had no clue either. I bet it's something nifty. The curved mount that fits to the reciever of whatever this goes to says NEWTON on the underside.

While I know little about vintage scopes I may be able to give you a clue for your search.
As I remember it a famous high velocity cartridge designer by the name of Newton also built both custom rifles and scope sights.
The scope you have looks lke it may have been one of his products.

It has a military look to it, so it may have come from a Machinegun mounting or an antitank gun mounting of some sort rather than from a rifle, though its more likely a Target rifle scope.
I think he made lefthanded actions as well as the standard right handed bolt actions.
His rifles are major collectors items and highly advanced in design even compared with todays sporting rifles.

I think that style was fitted onto machineguns from bunkers and tanks to make the outside world more visible to the gunner through a smaller hole.
The stlye of mount looks like it would fit a woodless item.
What are the numbers on the optics that you can guess?
Short eye relief? (probably)
what does the reticle look like?

Neat! For $20 I'd have bought it too. If the original side mount can be removed without hurting anything, I'd find some rings for it and put it on soemething old-timey and fun but thats just me.Oh, and I have no idea what it belongs to, sorry.

It appears, from responses on another board, it may be a sight meant for a Mossberg M46, though the guy that said it has a marking on his reading "Mossberg 4d" and mine says nothing.

After looking in Strobel's "Old Rifle Scopes", it looks identical to a Mossberg #6 (1935-1940). He gives a value of $60-$125, but the book was printed in 2000.

It was put in the mount backwards, turned out. Appeared to be a Mossberg type, as pictured.

What i did with my mystery scope

I had the same scope. Mounted it on an Uberti Revolving Carbine that I converted to .22 with a Kirst .22 conversion unit. I antiqued both the carbine and the scope for a vintage look.
